An Overview of Two Great Sportsbooks
DraftKings and FanDuel are the most ambitious, popular and exciting sports betting brands in the United States right now. So popular, the two are competing to be a top sportsbook in Ontario as the province is now the first in Canada to legalize sports betting. You can read our DraftKings sportsbook review and FanDuel sportsbook review for a thorough breakdown of each site, but they are both very impressive. FanDuel has gained market leadership in most states, but DraftKings is a very determined rival, and their battle for supremacy looks set to define the U.S. sports betting industry for years to come.
DraftKings vs. FanDuel Breakdown
|Sports & Bets Offered|
Jason Robins, Matthew Kalish and Paul Liberman founded DraftKings out of Liberman’s house back in 2012. It was initially a DFS (daily fantasy sports) provider, but it quickly pivoted towards sports betting after the Supreme Court overturned PASPA, a federal sports wagering ban, in 2018. Two years later, DraftKings merged with white-label sportsbook provider SBTech and a special purpose acquisition company, and went public on the NASDAQ.
It is in the process of switching from the Kambi sportsbook platform to the SBTech platform. DK Sportsbook is live in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Colorado, Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Iowa and New Hampshire, while it has also launched an online casino in some states, you can play DraftKings’ DFS games across the country.
Draftkings is certaintly sweeping the nation and is now looking to be one of the premier sports betting sites in Ontario as the province was the first in Canada to legalize sports betting. If you live in Ontario, check out our review of the Draftkings Ontario Sportsbook to learn how to place your first bet.
FanDuel also began life as a DFS provider when Nigel Eccles, Lesley Eccles, Tom Griffiths, Rob Jones and Chris Stafford founded the business in 2009. In November 2016, it announced an intention to merge with DraftKings. Had the deal been approved, the FanDuel vs. DraftKings debate would never have dominated the U.S. sports betting narrative, but the Federal Trade Commission blocked it, arguing that it would create a DFS monopoly.
In May 2018, just after PASPA was struck down, Paddy Power Betfair purchased a controlling stake in the company and swiftly launched FanDuel Sportsbook. Paddy Power Betfair has since rebranded as Flutter Entertainment, increased its stake in FanDuel to 95% and cemented its status as the world’s largest sports betting company by purchasing The Stars Group for $6 billion.
It is the market leader in most of them, ahead of DraftKings, although DraftKings is No. 1 in certain pockets of the country. Similar to Drafkings, Fanduel will be competing to be one of the top sports betting sites in Ontario come April 4th, check out our review of the Fanduel Ontario Sportsbook to learn why it will be one of the best.

|Welcome Offer||Bet $5 on any NFL Moneyline, Get $200 in Free Bets (if it wins)||No Sweat First Bet Up to $1,000|
|Daily Odds Boosts||Yes||Yes|
DK & FD Welcome Offers
DraftKings offers new customers a Bet $5 on any NFL Moneyline, Get $200 in Free Bets (if your wager wins). You'll get 8 $25 free bets, which you'll have seven days to use. There is also a 20% match deposit bonus of up to $1,000. You would need to deposit $5,000 of your own money to unlock the full amount. DraftKings Sportsbook then requires you to complete a 25x release requirement on the bonus funds, which is a little arduous. DraftKings competitors such as Bet365 and BetRivers impose just a 1x rollover on their 100% match deposit bonuses. On the plus side, DraftKings Sportsbook generally throws in a very generous $50 no deposit bonus as part of the welcome bundle, and that is very appealing.
FanDuel offers a No Sweat First Bet up to $1,000 as an incentive to register for a sports betting account. If your first bet wins, you get to keep your money, just like any other wager. However, if it loses, you will be given a full refund – in the form of a free bet token – up to a maximum of $1,000. That is also an appealing offer, and it is much simpler than the DraftKings bonus. However, the FanDuel welcome offer will only benefit you if your first bet loses, where you will unlock DraftKings Sportsbook bonus funds regardless of whether or not your first wager performs.
Ongoing Bonuses & Promotions
Another key battleground in this DraftKings vs. FanDuel contest focuses on the ongoing bonuses and promotions that each site offers. These promotions are designed to keep existing customers sweet and stop them migrating to FanDuel competitors or DraftKings competitors. You can unlock several exciting offers at FanDuel, including parlay insurance, enhanced odds, free bets and more. There are always lots of appealing bonuses listed in the “Promotions” section of the site, which helps explain why it is the No. 1 sportsbook in so many states, like New York and Arizona for example.
DraftKings Sportsbook also offers a broad array of ongoing promotions. They include NBA parlay boosts, Big Birdie Payday offers on golf tournaments, daily free-to-play pools and a refer-a-friend offer. FanDuel typically offers a longer list of ongoing bonuses than DraftKings. However, you can earn loyalty points for placing bets at DraftKings Sportsbook, whereas FanDuel will only give you loyalty points for DFS entries. The DraftKings loyalty program provides you with DK Dollars, which can be used for free bets and contest entries. All in all, both sites are pretty even in this section of the DraftKings vs. FanDuel debate.
Available Sports to Bet On
|Premier League (EPL)||Yes||Yes|
FanDuel benefited from a very experienced in-house team of oddsmakers and sportsbook operators when it joined the Flutter Entertainment empire. The FanDuel Sportsbook runs on Scientific Games’ OpenSports engine, and offers betting on football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, tennis, soccer, MMA and boxing.
Additional sports covered include athletics, Aussie Rules, cricket, cycling, darts, motorsport, rugby league, rugby union, table tennis, volleyball and water polo, which is a very comprehensive list. Flutter Entertainment’s European sites offer betting on handball, netball, snooker, surfing, swimming, Gaelic sports, bowls and triathlon, so FanDuel could easily add them in future.
DraftKings Sportsbook, which recently made a seamless migration from Kambi to SBTech, covers more sports than FanDuel. You will find all the sports listed above, plus badminton, field hockey, handball, softball, surfing and swimming.
As a result, DraftKings Sportsbook still has upper hand in this section of the FanDuel vs. DraftKings comparison. Both sites offer very comprehensive coverage of all the sports listed, but FanDuel provides a larger array of betting options, including a same game parlay builder.
Daily Fantasy Sports
DraftKings and FanDuel dominate the daily fantasy sports industry, and they are both superb within this field. The user interface at both sites is very impressive, while the DFS bonuses offered by FanDuel and DraftKings are identical. If you perform a FanDuel vs. DraftKings NFL fantasy comparison, there is very little to choose between them. There are slight differences in scoring – DraftKings offers a full point per reception, whereas DraftKings offers a half-point – but on the whole they are pretty even.
We should point out in this DraftKings vs. FanDuel comparison that they cover some different leagues. FanDuel has WNBA, whereas DraftKings does not, and FanDuel’s golf coverage is broader. However, DraftKings has much wider coverage of e-sports and features more international sports leagues. DraftKings also offers more high stakes contests and options than FanDuel, with a lower rake on those games, so DraftKings has a slight edge overall.
Mobile Betting App - Which is Better?
FanDuel and DraftKings sportsbooks offer two of the very best sports betting apps in the world. The FanDuel Sportsbook & Casino app has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 on the Apple Store after receiving more than 600,000 user reviews. Its DFS app has an identical score.
The DraftKings Sportsbook & Casino app also has an average rating of 4.8 after receiving north of 350,000 reviews from customers. At Google Play, FanDuel Sportsbook is rated 4.7 out of 5, while the DraftKings app has a score of 4.7. FanDuel has roughly 110,000 ratings, while DraftKings has just under 50,000 on Google Play.
As far as user experience, FanDuel is a market leader in this area and it's easy to see why. The app's blue and white color scheme is easy on the eyes and the screen on Apple phones allows users to view four NFL markets. Meanwhile, DraftKings has a nice black and green color pallette, but you can only view two NFL markets at a time on an iPhone 13 pro screen.
The FanDuel app is simplistic and gives you want you want - odds - right away when you fire it up. The DraftKings app feels a little cluttered by promo boxes and you have to scroll a bit to get to the day's odds.
Both mobile sports apps are very polished, modern, stylish and easy to use. They both have teams of developers that work continually on new features, performance improvements and fixing bugs.
Rival sportsbooks often struggle with location services, but that is not the case at DraftKings or FanDuel. This is another round in the FanDuel vs. DraftKings battle that really must end in a tie. It might ultimately come down to an aesthetic choice – if you prefer a dark background and a slightly more intricate design, go for DraftKings, whereas FanDuel is more appealing to anyone that likes a light, clean interface that is really easy to navigate.

FanDuel offers slightly more appealing lines than DraftKings Sportsbook. It generally offers standard juice lines, but you will sometimes find -113 / -106 or -114 / -105, which is a little more generous. DraftKings has a habit of charging an extra point here and there. You often find -114 / -107 or -112 / -109 on sides and totals, which is a little below average.
When it comes to moneyline odds, props and futures, FanDuel will often have better prices than DraftKings, but sometimes DraftKings leads the way. For that reason, many sports bettors abandon the FanDuel vs. DraftKings debate, sign up for accounts with both sites and just choose the best available odds on each game.
Live In-Play Betting
DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook both excel when it comes to live betting. They both provide live streaming, so you can watch the action unfold while placing wagers. Both in-play betting sections are laid out in a neat, tidy format, and they each provide you with a wealth of live betting options.
For example, at both sites you can bet on the outcome of each point, game and set within a tennis match. FanDuel provides more alternative spreads and totals, more statistical information on live games and covers slightly more sporting events in-play. So, FanDuel may have the slight edge in this aspect of the FanDuel vs. DraftKings head-to-head.
Payment Options & Cash Out
|Online Bank Transfer||Yes||Yes|
|Deposit Min/Max – Debit/Credit Card||$5/$2,000||$10/varies|
|Deposit Min/Max – PayPal||$5/$2,000||$10/varies|
|Minimum Withdrawal||$1-$15||None listed|
|Bank Transfer Withdrawal||Yes||Yes|
You will have a broad range of payment options to choose from at DraftKings and FanDuel. They both accept Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, a Play+ card and wire transfers. One difference is that DraftKings accepts ACH deposits, but that is no longer possible at FanDuel. You can also pay in cash at the casino cage of partner properties. DraftKings has a minimum deposit of $5, compared to $10 at FanDuel, and that lower limit might appeal to casual bettors.
FanDuel tends to process payout requests quicker than FanDuel. It actually has a section of its site where it touts fast payouts in as little as 24 hours, while warning visitors that DraftKings Sportsbook takes up to seven business days for withdrawals to go through. There is no official maximum withdrawal limit at either site.
FanDuel has slightly larger maximum winnings than DraftKings. They will both pay out up to $1 million on NFL, NBA, MLB, college football and college basketball wagers. However, DraftKings only goes up to $250,000 for NHL and $500,000 for soccer, whereas FanDuel will offer a maximum payout of $1 million on both. FanDuel also offers larger maximum winnings on tennis and golf, plus sports like MMA and smaller events.
DraftKings and FanDuel have both signed a huge range of sponsorship deals in a bid to boost their brands. For example, in 2021, DraftKings agreed to a $350 million partnership deal with UFC, which was the largest sponsorship deal in the promotion’s history. FanDuel, DraftKings and Caesars then signed $1 billion worth of deals with the NFL.
Both DraftKings and FanDuel have sponsorship deals with a variety of NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL franchises. FanDuel sponsors the LA Lakers, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic and the Dallas Mavericks. FanDuel Sportsbook has team-level sponsorships with the Colts, Broncos and Washington, while DraftKings has partnered with the Eagles and the Giants. DraftKings’ NBA partners include the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers. These deals give DraftKings and FanDuel the rights to marks and logos, in-game promotions, activations and branding.
Once again, there is very little difference between these sports betting giants on the partnerships front. FanDuel is part of the world’s largest gambling company, which has very deep pockets, while DraftKings is flush with cash after going public in a SPAC deal in 2020. And both operators are investing heavily in sponsorship deals as the battle for market share heats up.
Customers can rack up loyalty points, known as "Crowns" by placing sports wagers at DraftKings. If you earn 100 crowns in a month, you will hit the Bronze tier. A monthly total of 500 points lands you in the Silver tier, and you can move up to Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Black. If you reach one of these tiers, you will receive daily rewards the following month. These daily rewards include free entry to contests and DK Dollars, which you can use for free sportsbook wagers.
FanDuel runs a loyalty program, but it is only applicable to the DFS section of the site. You will not earn points by placing sportsbook bets. This is one of the major DraftKings pros and one of the main FanDuel cons. FanDuel might consider extending its loyalty program into the sportsbook in order to compete with DraftKings in future.
Location & Availability
As you can see, the availability is very similar. DraftKings is in New Hampshire, while FanDuel Sportsbook is not, and that is the only difference. Both sportsbooks are on the expansion trail, so we should see them launching in many more states in future.
Final Verdict: Which is Better? FanDuel or DraftKings
FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings both excel in a number of important categories. They both offer high-quality mobile apps, polished desktop sites, excellent live betting platforms, a broad array of payment options, safe and reliable withdrawals, deep sporting coverage and attractive welcome bonus offers.
DraftKings offers a better loyalty program, more payment methods and a wider range of DFS options, and it covers more sports. FanDuel has slightly better odds, more ongoing promotions, larger maximum win limits and quicker withdrawals.
You should work out which of those categories are the most important to you and make your choice accordingly. Alternatively, you can enjoy the best of both worlds, and sign up for accounts with DraftKings and FanDuel. That way you will benefit from both welcome bonuses, and you can quickly grab the best odds available at FanDuel or DraftKings on each game.
