The MLB betting odds to win the 2021 American League Cy Young Award have dramatically shifted since the All-Star break. The Cy Young Award has been handed out since 1956, but split into two awards, one for each league, in 1967.

Starting pitcher Shane Bieber of Cleveland won his first AL Cy Young last year after going 8-1 in 12 appearances. Chicago White Sox starter Lance Lynn has overtaken Gerrit Cole of the Yankees in MLB futures betting as the top contender for the 2021 award.

Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani has generated buzz for his hitting and pitching prowess, but his odds here have tumbled out to +10000 in the Cy Young chase on sports betting apps.

Top AL Cy Young Contenders

Lance Lynn, White Sox

Odds: -240 at FanDuel

Lynn has recorded just one victory in the past month, but his 2.04 ERA is tops in baseball. He’s compiled 135 strikeouts against just 35 walks in his 114.2 innings. Lynn has been dependable as the White Sox have pulled away from the rest of the AL Central, going six or more innings in five of his past six starts.

Lynn found his groove in mid-June and has been on a roll since. He is on track to throw about 185 innings this season. Any value to back him here is long gone. We liked him at +380 five weeks ago.

Gerrit Cole, Yankees

Odds: +350 at FanDuel

Cole had dominated this market since the start of the 2021 season. Just a month ago, he was the best overall pitcher in the American League and sat atop the Cy Young betting markets at the top sportsbooks. He was -105 at FanDuel. Cole went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts in just 212.1 innings during MLB’s last full campaign in 2019.

But that was before MLB's crackdown on sticky stuff. Since word of MLB’s decision broke on June 3, Cole is 4-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 10 starts.

Overall, Cole was on pace to make more than 30 starts for the fifth time in his career, and log 200 innings in the process, before he was sidelined with COVID-19 two weeks ago. Overall, his 176 strikeouts in 130.1 innings and 0.999 WHIP lead the majors.

Talk of Cole making an impact in the AL MVP race has tapered off. Cole is also the only veteran among the MLB odds favorites on the AL side to rank in Cy Young voting three or more times.

This is the first time all season backing Cole in the AL Cy Young race makes sense, especially given the resurgence of the Yankees in the AL playoff race. He offers good value on this board and could pull this off with a strong final six weeks.

Carlos Rodón, White Sox

Odds: +750 at FanDuel

Rodón and the White Sox entered 2021 with lofty expectations. Rodón has delivered. He no-hit the Indians on April 14, and only missed a perfect game when he hit a batter on the foot with one out in the ninth.

He’s built upon that near-flawless performance and had moved into Cy Young contention in the eyes of the sports betting sites, who did not have him anywhere near the top early in the season. We tabbed him as a value play when he was +1500 back in May.

But Rodón's odds tumbled from +320 to +750 on Aug. 11 when news broke that he was placed on the 10-day DL with a shoulder strain. The White Sox have all but wrapped up the Central, so his return will be slow with a focus on getting ready for the playoffs.

Rodón (9-5) has 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings and has logged a 2.38 ERA in 19 starts. He held an edge in this race over his teammate Lynn a month ago. At FanDuel sportsbook, he once led all AL Cy Young Award candidates in betting handle and bet count, with 17% of the tickets in that market.
