The Phoenix Suns went 49-33 in the regular season, but a first-round playoff disaster was too much for ownership. Head coach Frank Vogel was shown the door.

The Suns were built to win a championship immediately with a Big Three of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. But the team ran into a buzzsaw of Anthony Edwards and were unceremoniously swept out of the opening round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Now the Suns seek a new leader to get this team not just to the next level, but a few levels up – and immediately.

Vogel led the Lakers to an NBA title just four seasons ago. Since then, he’s been fired twice. Such is life in today’s win-now environment.

The Suns are unlikely going to pick a rookie coach to feel his way around this one. They’re built to win now and have no time to waste. The team has two more seasons until Durant becomes a free agent, and they’re so mired in salary cap space that not much outside help can be expected.

Mike Budenholzer checks all the boxes. He’s won an NBA title – his Milwaukee Bucks knocked out the Suns in the 2021 NBA Finals – and was a success with the Hawks prior to his run in Milwaukee. Budenholzer was shockingly let go after a surprising first-round exit of the 2023 NBA Playoffs. He didn’t coach anywhere this past season, so he’s available.

All accounts believe Budenholzer is a priority target for the Suns. If the two sides don’t make it work, there are other options.

Ty Lue has one year left coaching the Clippers, but there are reports that neither side is in love with the other. If he ends up leaving that L.A. team, the other one, the Lakers, are expected to make a run. Chauncey Billups, coach of the Trail Blazers, also has one year remaining on his contract, but the Blazers have already picked over his staff. A change of scenery could come there, and Billups is young-but-respected in coaching circles.

Heat assistant Chris Quinn, Celtics assistant Sam Cassell, and former Villanova coach Jay Wright could also get strong looks. NBA analyst and former player JJ Redick is presumed to be a future head coach and could wow the interview process.

Former Lakers coach Darvin Ham leads The Field.
