Is there anything better than a good cup of coffee? Whether it’s kicking off your day, getting over that 2 o’clock hump, or a jolt of energy to burn the midnight oil (we’ll also accept an espresso martini as a nightcap), the time is always right to enjoy a nice cup of joe.

Whether you’re a cold brew fanatic, swear by lattes, or go big with espresso shots, we’re an all-inclusive website that appreciates all different types of caffeine boosts to get you through the day. And we couldn’t be more excited about National Coffee Day on September 29, which has us thinking:

But which states are really serious about their coffee? While you may think your personal coffee intake propels your respective state to the top of the list, there are multiple factors involved in determining our rankings. Specifically, we looked at the following factors to compile a final score for each state, and then ranked them 1-50. From Starbucks’ HQ in Seattle to the boutique roasters in Florida, here’s a look at where each state ranks among those that love coffee the most.

States That Love Coffee The Most 1

Hawaii Reigns Supreme On A Number Of Levels

This author honeymooned in Maui back in 2022, so let us be the first to tell you that Hawaii’s spot atop this list is absolutely warranted. For starters, any tourist will be heading back in time and have some serious jet lag by the time they arrive. What’s more, the state is known for its locals and tourists getting up early to see the sunrise and enjoy the early mornings and afternoons. If you’re a night owl, you’re probably not going to have the best time on the islands. But because it’s built for morning people, coffee is critical to functioning.

There are tons of shops and not all that many people per shop (which makes sense), meaning everyone can have their own personal coffee shop (or at least it feels like it). It also tops the charts on consumption and Google searches (this author personally contributed to both often a couple of years back). We’d also imagine that there are coffee beans grown in Hawaii that you literally can’t get anywhere else in the country. For all these reasons and more, Hawaii is the coffee capital of the United States.

For what it’s worth, chilly Alaska also ranked near the top of the list. We’d imagine it’s important to stay warm in those frigid temperatures—and it’s not like there are a lot of neighboring options to choose from.

As Expected, Utah Isn’t A Coffee Haven

More than 40% of Utah residents are Mormon, and Mormonism does not permit the use of harmful substances or hot drinks—and caffeine qualifies as the former while coffee certainly qualifies as the latter. Even cold brews won’t get it done for Mormons, so we’re not surprised in the slightest that Utah ranked dead last among Google searches for coffee and there are less than 5,600 people per coffee shop in the state.

Ironically enough, consumption rates were middle of the pack on the list—so Utah didn’t rank as low on the list as we otherwise would have expected it to. Still, we wouldn’t expect you to be drowning in coffee options if you’re headed to Utah.

The Pacific Northwest Shows Up Strong

Seattle and Starbucks go together like peanut butter and jelly, and the Pacific Northwest stays true to its colors. Staying with Washington, it ranked third on our list. Though it lacked in people per coffee shop, it more than made up for it with a number of shops and overall consumption. Despite being a smaller state, it has the fifth most Starbucks of any state on the list (only California, Texas, Florida, and New York have more) and it’s third on the list for searches. People know why they’re in Washington, and it shows.

But bordering Oregon is just as good—if not better. Oregon actually searches “coffee” more than Washington (only Hawaii beats it in that category) and it touts the third most Dutch Bros shops of any state (only Texas and California have more) that help it stand out. Case in point: If you’re looking for heavy, head to the northwest to get as many options as you can.

Methodology

In celebration of National Coffee Day on September 29th, Bookies.com set out to discover which states have the biggest passion for coffee. We analyzed three key factors: Google Trends interest scores for the term "Coffee" over the past year, the number of people per coffee shop in each state, and the annual coffee consumption per person by state (KG). Each factor was ranked on a scale from 1 to 50, with 50 representing the highest value. These rankings were then combined to determine the results.
