For the third year in a row, the Dallas Cowboys finished 12-5 in the regular season, and for the third year in a row, an early flameout in the NFC Playoffs caused frustration and questions to be asked about the direction of the franchise.

2024 Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft Prospects

Dallas didn’t do much in free agency due to cap issues. The addition of veteran LB Eric Kendricks from the Chargers was the only addition of note. They notably lost O-line anchor Tyron Smith and RB Tony Pollard to free agency. 

The offensive line has spots to upgrade at center, guard, and tackle, so it won’t be a shock if the Cowboys use No. 24 on someone up front. The flexibility of Tyler Smith, who can remain at guard or go back to tackle, where he played as a rookie and in college, offers the Cowboys a chance to go “best available O-lineman.” 

Duke’s Graham Barton projects as the top center in the class, but he has about a 50% chance of being available at No. 24, and Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson could make more sense for the Cowboys. He can play any interior line position and won the Rimington Trophy last year as the nation’s best center. Getting JPJ would be a big step in addressing a major team need.

Offensive tackles Amarius Mims of Georgia and Tyler Guyton of Oklahoma are solid backup plans, especially if the Cowboys project Smith as a better guard. OG Troy Fautanu of Washington will be snapped up if he’s available at No. 24. He was named a third-team All-American despite winning the Joe Moore Award for the nation’s top offensive lineman. 

There are no running backs projected to go in Round 1, but Dallas has a big need at the position, and the top RB in the field just happens to be a Texas man. Longhorns back Jonathon Brooks suffered a torn ACL at the end of the 2023 season but averaged 6.1 yards per carry and caught passes as well. Would anyone be shocked if Jerry Jones made this call?
