Nicky Henderson Horses To Follow

We start, of course, with the Cheltenham Festival – the Holy Grail of the National Hunt scene. As mentioned above, Nicky Henderson has a fantastic record in the Champion Hurdle, and he has a really strong chance of adding to his tally of eight wins in the race with current ante-post favourite Constitution Hill. Unbeaten in three racecourse starts, Constitution Hill absolutely blitzed the field in last season’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, bounding up the hill to win by an eased down 22 lengths. A similar performance would surely see him go close, although he may have to take on the superstar Irish mare Honeysuckle.

Second to Constitution Hill in last season’s Supreme was his stablemate Jonbon, and now that the imposing J.P McManus-owned six-year-old is due to go chasing, he could be a horse to follow very closely this season. Anything he achieved over hurdles – which was quite a lot – was always going to be a bonus, and he must now be a great bet for all of the Grade 1 Novice Chases across the calendar. He currently heads the market for the Arkle, but there is also a chance that he may step up in trip for the Turners Novices' Chase over 2m4f.

The brilliant Shishkin seems to be the apple of Nicky Henderson’s eye, but the former Supreme Novices’ and Arkle winner now has something to prove after an underwhelming performance in last season’s Champion Chase. Once again, he is high in the betting for the 2m chasing showpiece, but we must trust that last season’s performance was merely a blip. Do you think he can bounce back? One of the more interesting Nicky Henderson horses for the season may be Buzz. Not seen since winning the Ascot Hurdle, he also won the Cesarewitch on the flat last year, so a step up to three miles might be right up his street. He could be a value ante-post bet for this season’s Stayers’ Hurdle.

Others that have not been mentioned include the 2021 Marsh Novices’ Chase winner Chantry House, who may take a second crack at the Gold Cup before a tilt at the Grand National at Aintree. Last season’s Stayers’ Hurdle fourth and former RSA Chase winner, Champ, is another to deserve a mention. It will be interesting to see if the thorough stayer will stick to hurdles or revert back to fences for the season ahead.

Constitution Hill is seen by many as the banker of the Festival  in the Champion Hurdle, whilst last season’s Mares’ Hurdle winner Marie's Rock will more than likely look to defend her title. Fusil Raffles and First Street are two horses to keep an eye out for in the big handicaps.

Nicky Henderson Horses for the Grand National 2024

 Given that Nicky Henderson is still to register a win in the Aintree showpiece, supporters may not be eager to throw their cash at any of the veteran trainer’s runners. This year could be different, however, as Henderson will fancy his chances of breaking the hoodoo with the classy Chantry House. There could also be a surprise runner in Champ, if he reverts to fences after a good campaign in staying hurdles races last year.

Nicky Henderson Biography

Nicky Henderson was born in Broxburn, Scotland, in 1950, and after being educated at Eton College, he embarked on a career in the horse racing industry, firstly as an amateur jockey, and then as assistant trainer to the legendary, Fred Winter. At the age of 28, Henderson began training from the now infamous Seven Barrows Yard in Berkshire, and has since gone on to forge an incredible training career. Henderson has been Champion British trainer on six occasions and has amassed a British trainer record of 72 Cheltenham Festival wins. He has also enjoyed major victories in almost all of National Hunt’s biggest races, including three King George VI Chases and 10 Christmas hurdles at Kempton, two Tingle Creeks and five Celebration Chases at Sandown, and five Aintree Hurdles at the Grand National meeting. In fact, it is the Grand National itself that amazingly continues to elude the legendary trainer.

Another feature of Nicky Henderson’s training career is his loyalty to stable jockeys, of which he has had a few. Mick Fitzgerald was the first jockey to benefit greatly from the loyalty and support of Henderson, but sadly he was forced into retirement after a bad fall in the 2008 Grand National. After this, Nicky Henderson began a long and fruitful partnership with the brilliant Barry Geraghty, with whom he enjoyed tremendous success in the industry’s biggest races. In 2015, Geraghty would leave Seven Barrows to replace the retiring AP McCoy as retained rider for the powerful owner JP McManus, leaving Henderson with a conundrum on who would become his number one jockey.

Step forward Nico de Boinville, who had been a huge part of the set-up at Seven Barrows for many years. Nicky Henderson again showed incredible bravery and loyalty by promoting the young, and somewhat inexperienced de Boinville, to take the rides on what were some of the greatest horses of their generation at the time.

In the past, Nicky Henderson has been lucky enough to come across equine superstars including Sprinter Sacre, Long Run, Bob’s Worth, Buveur d’Air, Altior, and Simonsig, to name a few. In the past few seasons, Henderson has added to this list with the likes of Shiskin, Epatante, Jonbon, and Constitution Hill. It is the ability to teach, nurture, and protect these stable stars that has made Henderson one of the greatest trainers of all time. Although mother time may be catching up with the legend, having racehorses in his life keeps him young at heart.

As the man himself said recently, “My eyesight is getting very bad, but when I step into a stable with a horse, I see everything I need to see.”
