There was a bombshell on Monday 7 August when it emerged that Neymar has asked Paris Saint-Germain to leave this summer.

The Brazilian ideally wants to return to Barcelona, although the Catalan club might not be able to afford him. The forward has three years left on his PSG deal, with Chelsea and Barca now apparently at the front of the queue to land his signature.

Neymar has been with Paris Saint-Germain since 2017, but the Brazilian has only made 173 appearances for the French side in that time. His career with PSG has been blighted by injury, and last season was cut short after an ankle injury meant that his last game was against Lille on 19 February. The 31-year-old has represented Brazil in three World Cups, but he has not got past the quarter-final stage.

PSG spent the princely sum of £198 million to land Neymar from Barcelona six years ago, however, it could be that the 31-year-old now leaves the French capital, and football betting sites have priced the odds for several clubs who might be prepared to make a big-money approach for the forward’s services.

That includes Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United, the latter of whom already have Brazilians Casemiro, Fred and Antony on their books. They might be open to landing a marquee signing, especially if the prospective new owners want to make a statement after taking over at Old Trafford. We also know that Chelsea have the finances to make a move happen after spending over £500 million in January, but a return to Barcelona could also be on the cards.

It's not completely out of the question that Neymar becomes the latest big name to defect to the Saudi Arabia Pro League. He will have noted that Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante are some of the high-profile players to have signed up with Saudi clubs, although it does appear as though a stay at PSG is most likely.

Could Chelsea Land Neymar This Summer?

It appears that Chelsea could be in the running to land Neymar, with new betting sites making the London outfit one of the favourites to capture this forward.

While Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson have arrived at Stamford Bridge this term, Chelsea could look to land the 31-year-old to bolster their attacking options. The team were well short of goals last season, with new coach Mauricio Pochettino having also worked with the player at PSG.

Therefore, it could be that Chelsea return to the market and look to capture Neymar this summer. Money appears to be no object for owner Todd Boehly, who has previously held talks with Neymar’s representatives, and betting sites suggest a move to Stamford Bridge could be back on.

There will be no European football for the Blues next season, but Pochettino will be expected to mount a top-four assault, and with no midweek ties to distract them, possibly they might even be targeting the title. Much depends on whether Neymar is prepared to join a team who are something of an unknown quantity after a difficult campaign.

Will Neymar Push For a Barcelona Return?

It would appear that Barcelona is Neymar's first-choice destination, and the odds suggest that a return to the CampNou could be on the cards. However, much comes down to whether Barca can afford the Brazilian.

After all, the Catalan side were strongly linked with a Lionel Messi returm before the Argentine instead made the switch to Inter Miami, with the Spanish champions falling short on the financial front.

Neymar previously enjoyed a spell at Barcelona between 2013 and 2017, and perhaps the Brazilian could be ready for a homecoming this summer. There has been increasing speculation that the 31-year-old is agitating for a return to Spain, where his first spell produced 68 goals in 123 appearances.

The biggest issue is that Barcelona aren't in a financially strong position to sign players or offer lucrative contracts, but they are in the Champions League

PSG would demand an enormous transfer fee for the services of a player who is contracted to the club, but Barcelona's odds have shortened in recent weeks, and perhaps they can try to make a move happen.

Will Neymar Stay At PSG Despite Transfer Request?

Lionel Messi has now left Paris Saint-Germain to join Inter Miami in the MLS, while there are doubts that Kylian Mbappe will feature for the French champions due to his contract stand-off.

Perhaps Neymar will therefore stick around at the Parc des Princes now that the dynamic has changed, with the Brazilian still contracted at the Ligue 1 giants. After an injury-hit season, the forward might now have the chance to be the main man in attack.

Neymar is on a handsome contract at the French club. He has scored 24 goals for club and country since June 2022, with the forward starting the 2022/23 season on fire. But he has been unable to help the Paris club win the Champions League. There are two main issues with the player at PSG: injury problems are accompanied by a lack of discipline on the pitch.

It’s always a challenge for any PSG manager to control an ego as big as Neymar’s, and it will be interesting to see whether the club are keen to retain the player’s services or listen to offers from other clubs in a bid to make Mbappe the main man and play the French forward in his preferred central attacking position. However, the latest odds suggest that the Brazilian is remaining in the French capital this season.

Could a Move to Saudi Arabia Be On The Cards?

Al Hilal missed out on Lionel Messi's signature, and it might be that they now focus their efforts on landing Neymar instead. It's clear that some of the clubs in the Saudi Arabia Pro League would be willing to make the Brazilian icon a massive offer, with this potentially representing a fresh start for the forward.

Considering that he is contracted to PSG right now, it would take a huge transfer fee to wrest the player away from the French club along with meeting the player's extortionate demands. However, we know that the finances are in place to potentially make this deal happen.

Neymar Linked To Manchester United

There’s no smoke without fire, and French newspaper L’Equipe has previously reported that Manchester United have been in "advanced talks" to sign Neymar this summer.

However, United have just splashed the cash to sign Rasmus Hojland and the fact that they've spent £72 million on the former Atalanta forward suggests we should see the forward featuring regularly.

The betting apps still think a move to Old Trafford could potentially happen this summer although Erik Ten Hag is unlikely to recruit Neymar considering the issues that were all-too apparent with Cristiano Ronaldo.

With Casemiro having been an instant hit at Old Trafford, perhaps his compatriot can be persuaded to come to Manchester, with Erik ten Hag needing more firepower at the club considering that the team have been over-reliant on Marcus Rashford for goals this season, and Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst have struggled to score goals regularly.

Brazilian winger Antony and midfielder Fred are also on the books at United, and the odds suggest that a move could happen, with Neymar potentially looking for a clean break after a tumultuous time at PSG. He could be part of a Premier League and Champions League assault with the Red Devils.

Italy or Germany Next For Neymar?

Neymar is likely to have approaches from a number of quarters, and perhaps there could be some Serie A clubs interested in landing his signature. The Brazilian might be attracted by the prospect of operating in Italy, with Inter and AC Milan offering him the chance to play in a glamorous location, and he is sure to get amongst the goals domestically and in Europe for these sides.

The leading sports betting sites believe Juventus could even make an approach, while Napoli are kings of Italy right now and will be looking to strengthen ahead of the 2023/24 season, having been the stand out team in Serie A last season.

If Neymar doesn’t head to Italy, then perhaps the German Bundesliga could be his next destination. There are rumours that Sadio Mane will be leaving Bayern Munich this summer, and Neymar would represent a like-for-like replacement, with Thomas Tuchel having worked with the Brazilian previously during his time at PSG, and perhaps the pair could be reunited.
