How ‘bout them Broncos? Western Michigan provided the MAC’s first big upset of the season last week, outlasting Pittsburgh in a 44-41 thriller. It was a strong shot in a conference that still looks wide open, and things are about to heat up as we get the ball rolling on conference play in Week 4.

Toledo and Ball State were the top two college football betting favorites in conference entering the season, but the Rockets and Cardinals are sitting at 1-2 having both played a tough early schedule. This will be a big game from a momentum standpoint, with serious implications in the West division.

Ball State is a +4.5 home dog in college football odds posted at betting sites, and most of the public is backing Toledo so far. That make sense as Ball State is 0-3 against the spread, while the Rockets are 2-1 ATS and pushed Notre Dame to the brink in Week 2.

Elsewhere, we’ve got some enticing nonconference matchups with Ohio traveling to Northwestern, Miami (Ohio) playing at Army and Akron getting 49.5 points at Ohio State at most sportsbooks.

Week 4 MAC Best Bets

Toledo -4.5 over Ball State

Ball State looks like it’s in serious trouble after carrying heavy expectations into the season. A 10-point win over Western Illinois was a bad sign, and the Cardinals just got waxed 45-12 against an average Wyoming team. It’s hard to push the reset button after a start like this when all that preseason optimism goes away. Tensions get high, players start trying to do too much, fans get ornery – things can snowball in a hurry.

Toledo’s loss at Colorado State was closer than the 22-6 score indicated. The Rockets didn’t give up an offensive touchdown – just a punt return score and five field goals – and sophomore quarterback Carter Bradley has looked very sharp. He should shred this Ball State secondary, and the Rockets have looked better in every facet through three weeks. We’re on Toledo -4.5 at BetMGM.

Army -8.5 over Miami (Ohio)

This will be a big mismatch in the trenches, and that’s bad news for the RedHawks. Army’s rushing defense is stout as always and the Black Knights will force Miami (Ohio) quarterback Brett Gabbert into bad situations.

This is also such a different look than the RedHawks are used to seeing in the MAC and the defense is going to spend a lot of time on the field. Army is scoring 44.3 points per game and the RedHawks just won’t be able to sustain drives long enough to hang in this one for four quarters. Army is -8.5 on most betting apps, including at Caesars sportsbook. We’re taking Army.

Buffalo -13.5 over Old Dominion

We expect the Bulls on Parade to really get things going again this week and run all over the Monarchs. Buffalo hung tough with an explosive Coastal Carolina team in Saturday’s 28-25 loss, and Old Dominion hasn’t been able to get much going offensively in the early going.

The Bulls will be fired up the second they step off the bus after that thriller against the Chanticleers and a tough loss at Nebraska, and we expect them to fire on all cylinders. Buffalo -13.5 at FanDuel is the play.
