In the land of college football betting, the dog is king. That’s why Bookies.com is teaming up with a different animal shelter each week throughout the season to find dogs in need of a loving home.

College football handicapper Dan Kilbridge will start by examining the college football spreads at sportsbooks and picking his favorite underdog to cover the spread or win straight up that week. We then connect with a shelter near that team’s campus to share one lovable dog who could complete your family huddle.

It’s all about cashing bets and rescuing pets with Dog of the Week.

Our Dogs of the Week are cruising along at 4-3 on the season as we get ready to enter the home stretch. Now we’ve got our eyes on two more winners – Iowa is a +3.5 underdog at Wisconsin on betting apps, and Tanner is a one-year-old Terrier mix from Iowa City who’s ready to enter the transfer portal.

Before we dive in, good news to report: Hamburger, the first dog we highlighted, has been adopted from the the Champaign County Humane Society. Fletcher, Billie Jean, Pollo, Bunny, Riot and Monarch, the other dogs we’ve featured, are still looking for a home. Let's get all these pups adopted.

The Pick: Iowa +3.5 over Wisconsin

Odds are current at publication. Betting sites may indicate odds changes closer to kickoff.

Never has the Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man meme been more appropriate as a preview for a college football matchup. From an identity standpoint and current strengths/weaknesses, Iowa and Wisconsin are as similar as it gets.

The Hawkeyes and Badgers play lockdown defense and could be politely described as offensively-challenged on the other side of the ball.

The main difference now is that Iowa is still striving for balance. The Badgers have all but abandoned the passing game behind quarterback Graham Mertz, who has just two touchdown passes to seven interceptions this season. Wisconsin hasn’t thrown for more than 112 yards in any of its last three games, and Mertz hasn’t attempted more than 19 passes in a game since a 38-17 loss to Michigan.

The Badgers can eat up a ton of clock and yards on the ground, but it hasn’t been all that productive – Wisconsin is 11th in the Big Ten in scoring offense and second-to-last with just 146 passing yards per game. Iowa has similarly-bad offensive numbers, but scoring-wise they’re sixth in conference and seem comfortable with the methodical pace behind quarterback Spencer Petras.

Iowa also has the rest advantage here coming off a bye week. We like a steady hand like Kirk Ferentz in these situations – now in his 24th year with the Hawkeyes, the dude knows how to handle an off week for his program. And since 2003, Iowa is 21-13 against the spread having covered at a 61.8% clip coming off a bye.

This is gonna be your textbook Big Ten slobber knocker, with the total set at a meager 36.5. We love Iowa getting the hook here and are taking the Hawkeyes +3.5 in Madison. Bet on it with Caesars Sportsbook.

The Pup: Tanner

Tanner is a one-year-old Terrier mix with a smile that could melt the coldest of Hawkeye hearts. He loves the great outdoors and is a great companion for adventuring in nature or just throwing the ball around in the backyard. Tanner is built like a middle linebacker and loves to play around.

You can find out more about Tanner at the Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center.
