The Yankees and White Sox are set to play in a game more than 30 years in the making Thursday in Dyersville, Iowa.

The “Field of Dreams” game was inspired by the 1989 film starring Kevin Costner, in which an Iowa farmer builds a baseball field on his cornfield and summons the ghosts of baseball’s past. Whether you loved it, hated it, or never saw it, we know at least one thing to be true with events like marble racing, table tennis and Korean baseball gaining traction over the past year-and-a-half.

If you build it, they will bet.

Thursday’s Yankees-White Sox tilt will attract far more MLB betting interest at sportsbooks and betting sites than your average mid-August baseball game thanks to the unique circumstances. Major League Baseball built an 8,000-seat ballpark next to the original diamond where the movie was filmed. It will probably look cool, at least, with throwback jerseys, cornstalks, the whole deal.

Field Of Dreams Game Betting Tips

This will be the first-ever MLB game in Iowa, and it should create a decent betting handle with all the unique tie-ins to draw viewers for a national broadcast on FOX. What to expect from the actual game and brand new ballpark from a betting perspective remains to be seen.

The White Sox are the home team and will go with Lance Lynn after expected starter Carlos Rodon was placed on the 10-day DL. The righty has a 2.04 ERA on the year and has made quality starts in five of his last six assignments. The Yankees plan on going with newly-acquired lefty Andrew Heaney. The former Angel has allowed four earned runs in each of his first two starts with New York.

It’s not surprising to see the White Sox as significant -195 favorites given Lynn’s form and Heaney’s slow start with the Yankees. Chicago also has the more powerful lineup. But if the game is tight going into the later innings, the Yankees have the better bullpen and could have some value as an underdog.

As for the total, 8.5 probably seems low at first glance and we expect a ton of action on the Over on betting apps. The dimensions are listed at 335 feet to the foul poles, 380 feet to the power alleys, and 400 feet to centerfield. Those are almost identical to both Busch Stadium and Guaranteed Rate Field, and skew just a hair toward a hitter’s park. It also looks like hitter-friendly conditions with temperatures in the upper-80s for a typical, humid summer night in the Midwest.

However, we have to consider the outside circumstances in terms of over/under betting. This is an unprecedented travel routine for both squads with tons of distractions, and it might take players a while to get settled in at the plate. The teams aren’t arriving until the day of the game and probably won’t have time for a lengthy warm-up or batting practice session with all the pregame pageantry.

Field Of Dreams Game Pick

Yankees Moneyline

Odds: +165 at DraftKings

Considering the MLB betting lines on offer, we’ll probably stay away from the total given the uncertainty there. But we do think the underdog Yankees are worth a look.

Heaney pitched pretty well in his last start. He did give up four earned runs, but he went six innings and only allowed four hits. The surreal nature of it all might actually remove some of the pressure that comes with pitching at Yankee Stadium in pinstripes for the first time. And that bullpen has been the saving grace all season.
