Marcus Stroman is doing everything the Chicago Cubs could have asked for this season. The Cubs, however, could be sellers at the MLB trade deadline, and Stroman would be a hot commodity if so.

Stroman has indicated he does not want to be traded, but he can opt out of his contract and become a free agent at season’s end. Chicago has a tough decision to make regarding the National League wins leader.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed his hypothetical MLB odds for Stroman’s post-deadline team.

Who's in Play if Cubs Trade Stroman?

The trade deadline is Aug. 1, so there is time for the Cubs to bounce back, or fall further behind. Chicago is a modest 37-39 overall, three games behind the surging Reds and 2.5 behind the Brewers in the NL East, and 5.5 out of the final wild-card spot in the NL. There are a lot of games to be played, however, and Chicago has been playing markedly better as June winds down.

Stroman has been a part of the solution. Despite being on a sub-.500 team, the nine-year veteran is 9-5 with a 2.47 ERA. He leads the National League in wins, games started and hits allowed per nine innings (just 6.6). He’s top 10 in average allowed and WHIP.

When it comes to the buyers and sellers at MLB trade deadline time, nearly all the buyers are seeking starting pitching help. Stroman might end up being the No. 1 target of desperate teams looking for an edge. Chicago can stock up on an already solid farm system, really setting itself up for some strong future years.

If it were up to Stroman, he’d remain with the Cubs. “At this point in my career, I’m so open to anything. But it would bother me a bit, just because I feel like I do love it here, as far as the city, the organization from the top down, the fans,” Stroman said last month

The New York Yankees’ rotation hasn’t matched expectations, with Luis Severino and Nestor Cortes falling. New York is firmly in the hunt but the pitching will need to be better, especially if Aaron Judge remains indefinitely out. Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon can’t do it all.

The most trade capital belongs to the Baltimore Orioles, who are in the midst of a stunning resurgence. The O’s, who have the deepest farm system in baseball, have just three playoff berths in the 21st century and none since 2016. Hitting has been strong but the rotation could use a top-three guy like Stroman. Expect Baltimore to relish its rare status as buyer.

The top of the rotation of the San Francisco Giants isn’t scaring anyone, yet the team is in firm playoff contention. San Fran should be in the market for at least one starting pitcher. Stroman opted against signing with the Giants two years ago, but raved about their front office and culture

The Los Angeles Dodgers are always buyers, but getting consistent SP production has been elusive. L.A. ranks a modest 16th in starters ERA. They own the No. 2-ranked minor league system and may be able to put together a better package than other contenders.

The Los Angeles Angels have been good enough that they’re an all-in team now, before Shohei Ohtani hits free agency this offseason. They’ve already made two moves signaling their intentions. Pitching continues to be the question mark. Look for L.A. to be aggressive and added at least one starting pitcher in the next month.

The Toronto Blue Jays are in the mix to add Stroman, who spent the first four-plus seasons of his career with the Blue Jays. Toronto is in the rugged AL East, but has major questions to answer before the deadline regarding the struggling Alek Manoah as well as Hyun-Jin Ryu, who could return from Tommy John surgery in August. They could be proactive and add a starter like Stroman, then figure out how he fits in later. Adding Stroman also keeps him off the rival Yankees.

The Houston Astros have a strong top-of-the-rotation with Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier and Hunter Brown, and Jose Urquidy should return in August for the stretch run.

The Field includes other teams whose buyer/seller status remains TBD or are buyers but not necessarily with starting pitching as the top priority, including the San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners
