After a pair of 7-10 seasons and a season on the trajectory of 7-10, Robert Saleh was fired as coach of the New York Jets. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich takes over as interim coach.

He’ll presumably get an opportunity to remove the interim tag from the gig if things go well. The Jets are all-in on winning a championship now, with Aaron Rodgers at QB and a top-level defense that needs to play like it.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed his NFL Odds as to who will be the next full-time Jets head coach.

2024 Jets Coach Top Candidates

The decision to part ways with Saleh was, according to Jets owner Woody Johnson, “mine alone.” So clearly he’ll have a huge say as to who the next HC is.

One would have to assume that a coach with an offensive background would be the preferred route. The Jets have a strong defense and Saleh is a defense-first coach. But the offense has been stagnant.

There are several first-time options that will be on every team’s radar in the off-season. Lions OC Ben Johnson, Packers OC Adam Stenavich, and Texans OC Bobby Slowik are in that mold. Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury, who had an OK-went-south stint as HC of the Cardinals, could also be considered in that young-and-bright group.

Of course, no coach vacancy list is complete without Bill Belichick, the most decorated coach in NFL history. He’s currently a member of the talking-heads groups of NFL studio shows but doesn’t appear to have the coaching bug out of his system. Belichick has praised the Jets’ roster as one that can win a Super Bowl.

That said, there’s believed to be some lingering animosity between Johnson and Belichick that dates back more than two decades. Many insiders believe he’d have more fun coaching the Cowboys with Jerry Jones.

That opens the door for Mike McCarthy, who has a Super Bowl ring with the Packers, coached Rodgers to several MVPs, and has built the Cowboys into an offensive juggernaut. If the Cowboys part with McCarthy, the Jets offer a spot to stay in title conversations. It is possible, however, that McCarthy has had his fill of Rodgers drama for one lifetime.

Ulbrich has never been a head coach before, but the former 49ers linebacker has been a defensive coordinator since 2020 with the Falcons before moving to the Jets the following season.

Coaching college has become much more of a business with NIL in the mix. That could drive great CFB minds into the NFL. Dabo Swinney of Clemson famously added nobody from the transfer portal this offseason. He might be sick of the “new games” of college football.
