The Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay is over. It produced one Super Bowl championship and four MVP awards for QB12, but he’s going to the New York Jets. The Packers are now Jordan Love’s team.

It was time for a change, anyway. After three straight 13-win seasons followed by upset losses in the playoffs, the Packers finished just 8-9 in 2022 and missed the postseason for only the seventh time in the 21st century. This team has title-contending strengths, but season-disrupting weaknesses that must be addressed.

Bookies.com oddsmaker Adam Thompson has used his resources of NFL contacts developed over 20 years covering the league and the NFL Draft to create his hypothetical NFL futures odds on who gets selected 13th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Who Will The Packers Take In 2023 NFL Draft?

For the first time since 1991, the Packers go into a season without Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers to lead the way. Off they go into uncharted waters with untested Jordan Love, who is 0-1 as a starter, with three TDs and three INTs in 10 appearances.

The Packers have done essentially nothing of note in free agency as they, like the Ravens, have been held in limbo thanks largely to QB uncertainty. Green Bay lost WR Allen Lazard, which puts a young and inexperienced receiving room under even more pressure.

Add to it the free agent loss of TE Robert Tonyan, and Love is going to be relying a lot on players even younger than himself to catch his passes.

Michael Mayer Odds to Join the Green Bay Packers

Receiver and tight end are must-improves, for Love’s sake. At No. 13, the Packers should have strong options to choose from at both positions. In fact, it’s possible no WR or TE will have been selected when Green Bay goes on the clock.

Dalton Kincaid of Utah and Michael Mayer of Notre Dame are considered future Pro Bowlers at the tight end position. Mayer is considered a rookie with the polished game of a savvy veteran, someone a green QB like Love would likely come to rely upon on crucial downs. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Mayer has been compared often by scouts to Jason Witten, who made 11 Pro Bowls, the first in just his second year in the league. That’s the type of production the Packers have lacked at tight end for a very long time.

When it comes to receivers, Jordan Addison of USC is strongly atop WR charts for some teams and down the list for others. The Packers reportedly are in the Team Jordan camp. The 5-foot-11, 173-pound Addison is a speedster with great hands and the ability to play inside or outside. He could be a great complement to the 6-4 Christian Watson and 6-2 Romeo Doubs, both playing at over 200 pounds.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba of Ohio State played just three games in 2022 and is more of the mold of Doubs, but his skills were evident in 2021 when he had 95 receptions for 1,606 yards for the Buckeyes. He’s expected, with Addison and Quentin Johnston of TCU, to be a top-three wideout in the class.

The one caveat with choosing a pass-catcher: Safety was such a huge issue in 2022 it may force the Packers to instead take a leap on Brian Branch of Alabama. Branch is a plug-and-play standout, compared by scouts favorably to Minkah Fitzpatrick, who graded out as the third-best safety in the NFL by Pro Football Focus last season. Green Bay’s starting safeties, Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage, ranked an embarrassing 81st and 87th, respectively. Right now, Savage and Tarvarius Moore, who had eight tackles for the 49ers in ’22, are atop the depth chart.

The Packers are reportedly high on Iowa edge rusher Lukas Van Ness, though common sense would have us believe the team will focus on immediate help for Love.

The Field is led by other possible problem areas that may not rank as high as pass-catcher or pass-defender, but are important. Offensive tackle is one of those, with Paris Johnson Jr. of Ohio State and Broderick Jones of Georgia strong additions if Green Bay goes that route. The team could also veer to a different receiver, including Zay Flowers of Boston College. The Packers have been unpredictable in the draft under GM Brian Gutekunst.
