The Seattle Seahawks defied expectations in 2022, but they enter the 2023 NFL Draft with a surprisingly high pick.

That’s due to the offseason trade of QB Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Despite their surprise playoff berth, the Seahawks own the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, one previously owned by Denver, which finished 5-12.

QB Geno Smith has been locked into a longer-term deal, so a new quarterback isn’t a requirement. The Seahawks do have glaring needs that require addressing before Week 1 of 2023.

Bookies.com oddsmaker Adam Thompson has used his resources of NFL contacts developed over 20 years covering the league and the NFL Draft to create his hypothetical NFL futures odds on who gets selected No. 5 overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Who Will The Seahawks Take In 2023 NFL Draft?

With quarterbacks expected to be taken with the first two picks of the NFL Draft and in three of the first four spots, the Seahawks are in a fantastic position at No. 5. Their problem is many of the other Top 10-level prospects don’t align with the team’s most-pressing needs. Only the Arizona Cardinals pick before them and seek a non-QB prospect.

The Seahawks’ offensive line has been downright offensive the last couple of seasons, including in 2022. Center and Guard are considered two of the biggest needs right now, but there are no interior linemen expected to be in the Top 15, or perhaps even Top 20.

A defensive line that had issues was bolstered by the free-agent signings of Dre’Mont Jones and Jarran Reed. Edge rusher remains a big need, as does linebacker and safety on that side of the ball.

The Seahawks improved at both spots in free agency, adding S Julian Love from the Giants and LB Devin Bush from the Steelers. Improvements could still be made there at the draft.

There is a clear No. 1 safety in the Class of 2023, but Alabama’s Brian Branch isn’t considered a Top 10 type of player. No linebacker is expected to be picked in the Top 15. Arkansas’ Drew Sanders or Iowa’s Jack Campbell could be targets for Seattle at No. 20 – its own pick for the draft – as could Branch if he drops a little.

Jalen Carter Odds to Join the Seahawks

The D-line, especially on the edge, remains the other big need, and here is where Seattle is primed to take a havoc-causing rusher.

Will Anderson Jr. of Alabama is considered by many to be the top defensive player in the class. He was called the best Crimson Tide defender in 30 years. As a sophomore, he finished fifth in Heisman voting and was named the nation’s top linebacker two straight years.

Tyree Wilson of Texas Tech may have just as high a ceiling as Anderson, and could fit some team schemes better. The 6-foot-6, 271-pounder got to QBs and to RBs behind the line of scrimmage frequently, and some scouts believe his best days are still ahead of him.

If it comes down to a tough decision between edge rushers, the Arizona Cardinals, also in need of an edge and picking at No. 3, could make the decision for Seattle.

It’s possible Seattle brass likes the potential of two other key defenders, each of which would fill a need too.

While Seattle did add two interior D-linemen in free agency, Jalen Carter of Georgia is a far bigger talent than either of them, a can’t-miss type that Pro Football Focus declared the best interior linemen since it started grading players in 2014. Carter’s draft stock slid when he was arrested for reckless driving and racing in an incident that led to a death. His landing spot is a big question mark in this draft.

Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez is in a class by himself in the Class of 2023 cornerbacks. He’s expected to go Top 10 and should be on the board at No. 5. The Field includes QBs of the future to play behind Geno Smith for 2-3 seasons, including Will Levis of Kentucky, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Anthony Richardson of Florida.
