The PGA Championship at Southern Hills began as a slow burn before exploding in spectacular fashion late Sunday, with Justin Thomas coming from seven strokes back to beat Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff to capture his second Wanamaker Trophy.

That would normally be a tough act to follow, but the golf betting action for this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club looks juicy with Thomas, Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and other huge names atop the board at betting sites and betting apps.

While it’s not at all uncommon for tournament winners to enjoy the spoils of victory and take the next week off, Thomas is still in the Charles Schwab Field as of now. The two-time major winner is the favorite with +800 odds coming off his playoff victory in Tulsa. Looking back at Thomas’ form after his 2017 PGA Championship win, he stayed hot with a T-6 at the Northern Trust and a win at the Dell Technologies Championship in his next two events.

Scheffler is second on the board with golf odds of +1000 after a disappointing missed cut at Southern Hills, snapping a streak of 15 consecutive weekend tee times. Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa are next at +1200, while Will Zalatoris and Viktor Hovland round out the top six at +2000.

Charles Schwab Challenge Expert Picks & Predictions

Justin Rose Top-10 Finish

Odds: +500 at DraftKings

Rose wasn’t exactly hogging the TV coverage through four rounds of steady golf at Southern Hills, but the 41-year-old Englishman finished with a solid T-13 thanks to a 2-under 68 on Sunday. He also struck it well all week and finished 11th in Strokes Gained Approach, better than everyone who finished top-five with the exception of Mito Pereira. This is yet another tournament where that will be our guiding metric, and Rose was better than most at an extremely tough course last week.

Rose has also played great at Colonial over the years, including a victory in 2018. He’s never missed the cut in eight appearances and has been top-25 four times, including a T-20 last year and T-3 in 2020. Formerly one of the most consistent players on Tour, Rose has been harder to pin down since his last win at the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open. But the Strokes Gained Total numbers are up from his last two seasons, he’s in great form and this is a course that always gives him a chance.

We’re on Rose for a top-10 finish at +500 with DraftKings.

Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Tips

Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas is a longstanding Tour stop with plenty of course history available. Recent winners including Daniel Berger, Kevin Na, Rose, Kevin Kisner, Jordan Spieth and Chris Kirk indicate this is very much a ball-strikers' course where distance isn’t a big factor. It helps, but accuracy and position off the tee are more important at this course.

The course is short by today’s standards and only plays around 7,200 yards, but scoring can be tough depending on conditions. Courses like Harbour Town and Copperhead at Innisbrook are pretty similar in terms of regular Tour stops, and we typically see the same type of player perform well at these three shorter but challenging tracks.

For our PGA betting picks, we’re looking at ball-strikers with a good history around those three courses, as well as players who hung tough and played well in difficult conditions all week at Southern Hills.
