Golf betting season is about to turn things up a notch.

This week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego gets us into the heart of the West Coast swing with iconic courses like Pebble Beach and Riviera County Club on deck for February. It also provides the best field of 2021 thus far and should tell us plenty about the guys beginning a new year in top form.

Check out and compare all the latest Farmers Insurance Open odds.

Past champion Jon Rahm is the favorite at +710, while Rory McIlroy is second at +875 entering his 2021 debut. San Diego native Xander Schauffele is +1200 and Tony Finau is +1700 coming off another disappointing Sunday with a fourth-place finish at last week’s American Express.

Charles Howell III (-106) over Rickie Fowler

You know all those Farmers Insurance ads that feature a smiling Fowler and run on a loop every weekend? They put a ton of money in his pocket, but they also require a lot of sponsor obligations at the Farmers Insurance Open. He will spend a lot of time meeting with reps, shaking hands, doing extra interviews, etc. This is also a hometown event for the San Diego native, which means even more pressure to perform and time spent handling ticket requests and other out-of-the-norm duties.

Maybe that explains why Fowler has struggled so badly here, with five missed cuts and nothing better than a T-61 over his past seven starts at Torrey Pines. Howell III’s stellar record here is a microcosm for his entire career – no wins, three runner-ups, eight top-10s and no missed cuts in 17 starts. That’s how you rack up more than $40 million in lifetime earnings on Tour yet still be able to walk the streets in relative anonymity. Howell III over Fowler is definitely the play. Roll with Howell at DraftKings.

Bubba Watson (-112) over Matthew Wolff

Watson enters a new year well-rested; he last teed it up at the Masters in November. Torrey Pines is definitely one of his favorite tracks – he was T6 last year and has four top-10s in nine career starts, including a win. Wolff hasn’t done much lately with nothing better than a T-40 over his last four starts dating to early October.

We expect Wolff to make the cut and play well this week, but we see a definite advantage for Watson in this matchup. Wager on Watson at BetMGM.

Patrick Reed (+100) over Harris English

It’s tough to fade English these days, but the price is right on Reed at +100. He’s one of if not the best on Tour when it comes to Poa Annua greens – a trickier type of putting surface installed at just a handful of courses on the schedule. That helps explain his success at Torrey Pines, where he has three straight top-25 finishes, including a T-6 in 2020.

Harris has a top-10 here but was T-71 last year and missed the cut in 2019. Reed is also third in strokes gained putting this season and has an even bigger advantage on Poa. We’re rolling the dice and taking Reed over Harris at even money with Unibet.

Louis Oosthuizen (-110) over Jordan Spieth

Spieth begins his season all the way down at No. 91 in the Official World Golf Rankings. It’s a shocking number for the three-time major champion, his lowest point in the OWGR since he first cracked the top 100 by winning the 2013 John Deere Classic at age 19. His game was still in shambles this fall with three missed cuts in six starts, and he never has played particularly well at Torrey Pines with just one top-25 in five career starts.

Oosthuizen is another terrific Poa putter and a beacon of consistency with his swing – pretty much the exact opposite of Spieth right now. Take Oosthuizen -110 over slumping Spieth at FanDuel.

Talor Gooch Top-5 Finish (+1600)

Bit of a longshot here, but we love Gooch’s game and expect him to contend several times this season. He finished T-21 last year in his first Farmers Insurance appearance and could top that this week. Gooch has two top-5s in his last six starts and bounced back from a terrible opening-round 74 to finish T-21 at last week’s American Express.

He was five shots off the cutline entering Round 2 and battled back with rounds of 6-under 66 and 7-under 65 on Friday and Saturday. Those types of weeks can do more for a guy’s confidence than four smooth rounds and a top-10 finish. We expect him to carry that momentum into a great weekend at Torrey Pines. Take a chance on Gooch at PointsBet.
