The Major League Baseball season begins on March 18 when the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs play a 2-game series in Japan.

Of the remaining 28 teams, 26 mark Opening Day on March 27. The opener between the Tampa Bay Rays and Colorado Rockies was moved back a day to give the Rays an extra day to get Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, ready for a full MLB season.

Without factoring in the Chicago Cubs – Los Angeles Dodgers two-game series at the Tokyo Dome in mid-March, the Cubs will travel the fewest miles of any MLB team this season at 23039.7. The Padres top the majors at 46806.1 miles traveled, more than twice what the Cubs will travel.

Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, the home of the Rays since the franchise began in 1998, was severely damaged by Hurricane Milton this past November. The team considered multiple sites before settling on Steinbrenner Field across Tampa Bay. The Yankees use the same stadium for their spring training games. The capacity for Steinbrenner Field is 11,026.

The Rays averaged 16,515 fans per game last season at the Trop, which holds more than 47,000 at full capacity.

The A’s left Oakland after last season. While they await their new stadium in Las Vegas, their home games will take place at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, California. That venue can accommodate up to 14,014, including lawn seating and standing room. The A’s were last in MLB attendance last season at 11,528 per game.

With 2 new stadiums in use this year, and the season starting in Japan, bookies.com has calculated the among of miles each MLB team will travel this season.

The mileage traveled for each team was calculated using the longitude and latitude coordinates of each team’s home stadium via ChatGPT using geodesic (air) distance between each coordinate. They are listed in miles rounded to 2 decimal points.

Road trips were calculated in travel order using the home stadium as a starting and ending point. If the Yankees were traveling from Yankee Stadium in New York, to Progressive Field Cleveland, to Comerica Park Detroit, back to the Stadium, the trip’s mileage was calculated in that sequence.

Miles Traveled By Each MLB Team in 2025 Ranked

Here is a chart breaking down the teams from most to fewest miles traveled.

Cubs, Dodgers Open Overseas In Japan

The Cubs and Dodgers open the MLB season with a pair of games on March 18 and 19 at Tokyo Dome in Japan. Each team will cover 32 time zones on for their round trip, as Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of the Mountain Time Zone.

That trip is not included in the figures above. The Cubs will travel a round-trip distance of 11,580.38 miles from their spring training site of Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona. Adding that number puts the Cubs at 34,620.1 total miles traveled in 2025. It also more than doubles their time zones for the entire season from 26 to 58.

Without the trip to Japan, the Dodgers travel 42734.1 miles this season. The Dodgers face a round-trip of 11,535.70 miles from their spring training home at Camelback Ranch in Arizona. The Japan trip boosts the Dodgers’ total miles traveled to 54269.7 and 82 time zones.

Longest, Shortest Road Trips In MLB

The Red Sox have the longest scheduled trip within North America in the majors this season. They visit the Seattle Mariners, the San Francisco Giants, and the Los Angeles Angels from May 16-25 before returning home to Fenway Park. That trip covers 6,113.69 miles.

The longest two-leg road trip of the season has the Miami Marlins visiting the Seattle Mariners and then the Los Angeles Dodgers in late April. It covers 5,768.96 miles. The trip from Miami’s loanDepot Park to T-Mobile Park is 2,729.27 miles. The visit to Chavez Ravine adds another 968.14 miles. Finally, the return trip to Miami is 2,341.55 miles.

The 2,729.27 miles between loanDepot Park to T-Mobile Park marks the furthest distance between any 2 MLB parks.

The shortest road trip in Major League Baseball is from Queens to the Bronx in the Big Apple. The linear distance between Citi Field, home of the Mets, and Yankee Stadium is a mere 6.55 miles.

Without traffic, the drive between Citi Field and Yankee Stadium can be done in 19 minutes. With traffic, you’re facing up to a 2-hour snarl. Public transit usually makes the trip in under an hour.

This year, the Amazins visit the Bronx from May 16-18 before heading to Boston. That journey covers a whopping 366.03 miles back to Citi Field.

MLB Stadium Breakdown: Eastern Time Zone Bias

Of the 30 MLB stadiums, nearly half belong to teams located in the Eastern Time Zone.

Those 14 teams are:

  • Atlanta Braves
  • Baltimore Orioles
  • Boston Red Sox
  • Cincinnati Reds
  • Cleveland Guardians
  • Detroit Tigers
  • Miami Marlins
  • New York Mets
  • New York Yankees
  • Philadelphia Phillies
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Washington Nationals
  • Tampa Bay Rays
  • Toronto Blue Jays

If you add the add the 7 teams in the Central Time Zone, that puts 21 MLB teams in the Eastern and Central Time Zones. Of those,16 are East of the Mississippi River. Two more home stadiums, Target Field in Minneapolis (Twins) and Busch Stadium in St. Louis (Cardinals) are less than a mile west of the river.
