For the second time in three NASCAR race weekends, the sport’s premier series visits a road course. And for the second time in three race weekends, Chase Elliott is the NASCAR odds favorite on sports betting apps.

The best road course racer of his era, Elliott surely received a boost of confidence by winning last week’s rain-plagued event at Nashville, where he led the final 39 laps to claim his second victory of the season. And now it’s on to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., where last season Elliott led 23 of the final 24 laps to record the seventh road course victory of his still-young career.

But as we discussed when NASCAR visited Sonoma a few weeks ago, Elliott is not the sure thing on road courses he once was. That victory last season at Road America remains his lone triumph in his last seven road course starts. The list of candidates to win at road courses—which now includes Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez and Christopher Bell, among others—is perhaps longer than it’s ever been, presenting opportunity for those bettors willing to look a little deeper in the pack on betting sites.

Christopher Bell To Win

Odds: +1500 at FanDuel

Bell and his No. 20 team seemed to completely whiff at Sonoma, where they started 31st and never found any speed all weekend. But that performance seems an outlier in a spring stretch that began with a third at COTA and has netted nine top-10s since. Bell has also finished every lap since Fontana in February, and you have to be around at the end to have a chance at Road America, where he was runner-up in 2021.

Tyler Reddick, Top Chevrolet

Odds: +1500 at DraftKings

Wait, Reddick over the dynamic Hendrick duo of Elliott and Larson? Given the NASCAR betting value, why not. The Richard Childress Racing driver was great earlier this season at COTA, where he recorded his fifth top-10 finish in 11 career road course starts. Reddick also led five laps last year at Road America, where he finished eighth.

Chase Elliott & Ross Chastain, Both Top 5

Odds: +300 at BetMGM

Pairing both of these contenders in one wager on betting apps gets you better value than if you take one of them to finish top-five on their own. While Elliott isn’t winning as much on road courses as he used to, he’s still almost always a contender. An Chastain has been just flat-out good everywhere in this next-gen car, including on road courses where his average finish is fourth.

Last season’s event at Road America, NASCAR’s first at the track since 1956, saw Elliott lead Bell, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin across the finish line. While the move to the next-gen car will necessitate some adaptation at the 4-mile track, don’t be surprised if many of those same contenders are vying for the victory once again Sunday.

Elliott has finished eighth and first over his last two races, and his average finish of 7.7 in road races is far better than that of any other active driver. Kurt Busch has a first, a second and a third over his last five starts, and while younger brother Kyle has hit a speed bump the past two weeks, he’s still run as consistently well as anyone over the course of this season. Bell meanwhile has been fantastic since early May, placing worse than ninth just once over that span.

Don’t discount Kyle Larson, who’s been much better on road courses than his results at Sonoma and Austin this season would suggest—he actually has one more road course victory than his Hendrick teammate Elliott dating back to last year. Chastain, who won at Circuit of the Americas and placed seventh at Sonoma, has run eighth or better in six of his last eight, continuing to show championship form when he’s not taking everybody else out.
