The 2024 Academy Award winners will be named on March 10. Cinephiles can legally bet on the outcome of the Oscars this year on betting sites in eight U.S. states, plus Ontario.

Legal betting on the Oscars is a relatively new phenomenon in North American betting markets.

It was first allowed in 2019 in New Jersey. Indiana opened Oscar betting markets in 2020. Michigan was added in 2021. Louisiana sports betting and Colorado then were added to the list in 2022. Massachusetts launched on March 10, 2023, just in time to allow Bay State bettors to wager on the Oscars the following Sunday. Kansas also took its first Oscar wagers in 2023.

All Oscars' wagers are moneyline bets. The odds you see are the odds you get. There are no point spreads or other discounts.

DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and bet365 have markets available in all 23 Oscars categories. ESPN BET is offering odds in 19 categories. Most betting occurs in the six major categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Actor In A Supporting Role, and Best Actress In A Supporting Role.

Oscar betting is limited to moneyline action. At FanDuel last year, the amount bet on each category was limited to a maximum wager of $1,000. Other betting apps traditionally limit Oscar action depending on each particular jurisdiction.

DraftKings Director of Race and Sports Johnny Avello, who posted the first Oscar odds back in the 1980s when he was in charge of the sportsbook at the Sands in Las Vegas, said nearly all the Oscars bets taken on his site range between $5-$500.

About The 2024 Oscars

The 2024 Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The 96th Academy Awards air live at 7 p.m. ET on ABC. Ratings have rebounded in the past two years, boosted in part due to the infamous "Slap Heard Round The World" courtesy of Will Smith's hand and Chris Rock's face in 2022. With Kimmel has host, the 2023 Oscars drew 18.7 million viewers, its highest number since 2020.

This is Kimmel's fourth time hosting the Oscars. In addition to hosting last year's show, which was uneventful, Kimmel was host in 2017 and 2018. It was in 2017 when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced "La La Land" as the winner. It turned out to be "Moonlight."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences determined 265 films eligible for Best Picture honors.

To be eligible for consideration in the general entry categories, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; New York; the Bay Area; Chicago; Miami; and Atlanta, between January 1-December 31, 2023. Films must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.

Where Is Oscars Betting Prohibited In 2024?

Betting on the Oscars is still more the exception than the rule in states where sports betting is legal. Some states have simply chosen not to establish betting markets on the Academy Awards. Others have outright banned them.

Four states have gone online since the start of 2023. Of those, only Massachusetts has allowed Oscar betting. It is still not allowed in Vermont, Maine, Ohio, and Kentucky. None of those states have a ban on any sort of award betting, it simply was never included on any of the approved betting catalogs offered.

Pennsylvania sports betting law limits sportsbook wagers to professional or collegiate athletic events. That means no betting on politics or award shows like the Oscars. That applies in Illinois sports betting law too, where wagering is also limited to sporting competitions.

In Virginia, for example, there is no specific prohibition against betting on events like the Academy Awards, but they are not legal, either. The Virginia Lottery would have to approve Oscars betting there. The same holds true for Iowa, where wagering on political events and elections is specifically banned. The Hawkeye State has yet to enact regulations to facilitate Oscars betting.

Meanwhile, Nevada has yet to approve live action on anything that is not tied to live sports without a predetermined outcome. That’s unlikely to change.
