Key Trials From the Last 10 Years

Two winners in the last 10 years have won the Grade 1 Flogas Novice Chase in February at Leopardstown (Monkfish and Fact To File). 2018 winner Monalee was placed and a further four runners went on to be placed in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase in 2022, 2021, and 2017. This race is now known as the Ladbrokes Novice Chase. That was won by Kaid d'Authie this year.

2022 winner L'Homme Presse was winner of the Scilly Isles Novices' Chase at Sandown, whilst Gerri Colombe won the 2023 edition before finishing second in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase. Sixmilebridge was the winner this year.

The Dipper Novices' Chase at Cheltenham was previously an excellent trial to follow, having produced two recent winners, but that was scrapped from the calendar in 2024.

Every winner of the Kauto Star Novices' Chase to run in this race has lost. However, eight horses who contested that race and lost have gone on to win. Might Bite falling with that race at his mercy then winning here could have changed that trend. Il Est Francais and Bravemansgame both skipped their chance to reverse this particular trend. Kitzbuhel won this season's edition.

Trainer Trends

Willie Mullins has saddled three winners in the last 10 years all of which came in the last five renewals. He trained the third and fourth in both 2022 and 2023, and the 2025 winner. However, he had four of the seven who ran last year so it's hardly surprising he trained the winner.

Nicky Henderson has two wins and four places from just 13 runners in the past 10 years. He has saddled four winners in his career, most recently Champ in 2020.

Paul Nicholls has just one winner and one place in the past 10 renewals but overall has three winners. Stay Away Fay in 2024 was his last runner as he didn't have an entry last year.

Gordon Elliott is currently 0/8 in this race, but three of those eight did place. He saddled the second and third home last year, with the third not counting for place purposes as there were only seven runners.

Jockey Trends

There are no real jockey trends of note, with the only multiple winners in the last 10 years now retired. Of the three Willie Mullins winners in the last five years, two have been his shortest-priced runner. with one ridden by Paul Townend and one by Mark Walsh as retained rider for JP McManus.

How Did the Trends do Last Year?

Lecky Watson went off as a 20/1 outsider and was even the outsider of the four Willie Mullins entries, so it's no surprise he busted some of the trends. He did still come into the race on the back of a win, was rated 152, had contested a graded chase, had a left handed win, a win over hurdles and had ran 59 days before the race - so ticked many of the boxes.

The question marks came as he wasn't running at the highest level, and had stamina to prove as he had never won over three miles. As a 20/1 shot beat a 22/1 shot it probably wasn't a vintage renewal of the race, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see a return for the trends this year.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2026?

Final Demand looked for all the world like he would be the trends horse this year for Willie Mullins. However, he fluffed his lines in the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at Leopardstown last time out and would now need to be only the second winner this century to win the race having not finished 1st or 2nd in his last race when completing.

No horse fits all the trends but Kaid d'Authie for Willie Mullins looks to be a solid pick as he fits most. He won a Grade 1 last time out beating Final Demand which gave him a lofty rating of 158, had a win over hurdles and has run at Cheltenham (albeit badly). He has won going left handed and should be in the top three in the betting on the day. Like Lecky Watson last year, he hasn't got a win over three miles to his name, and as a six-year-old he might not be battle hardened enough to win this.
