Phoenix Suns

Suns Under 51.5 Wins

The Odds: -120 at PointsBet

While we don’t doubt that Monty Williams’ group will again be in contention in the West, it’s worth noting that the team’s four leading scorers — Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Mikal Bridges — missed a total of 10 games during last season’s run.

Those Suns fans new to Arizona sports betting might be inclined to ride the wave. That would be unwise.

Their health was impeccable, but we’re not entirely confident it happens a second consecutive season. It’ll be a common theme you read in this preview, but the West is loaded; everything went right for the Suns in 2021, but there will be bumps in the road this time around that eventually keep them below 50 wins. We expect some regular-season turbulence in Phoenix that wasn’t there a year ago that eventually keeps them below this total.

Toronto Raptors

Raptors Over 35.5 Wins

The Odds: -120 at DraftKings

A core of Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, and OG Anunoby isn’t title-worthy — regardless of how good rookie Scottie Barnes is — but we don’t need them to be in order to win this bet. Thirty-six wins in a very average Eastern Conference that features a number of bottom-feeders isn’t all that tall an order for the Raptors, especially with Nick Nurse at the helm.

After a forgettable season that probably should have resulted in some tank-induced fines, Toronto should be right in the hunt for a playoff berth in an Eastern Conference that really only goes about six or seven teams deep. We wouldn’t be shocked to see them push for a .500 record — if not better — meaning they fly over this total at sportsbooks.

There also good news when it comes to Canada sports betting. Single-event wagering is now legal there, meaning Raptors fans can jump on Ontario sports betting and back their team.

Dallas Mavericks

Mavericks Over 48.5 Wins

The Odds: -105 at PointsBet

When the Dallas Mavericks plummeted into the stacked 2018 Lottery, they were coming off a 24-win season. Enter Luka Doncic, who brought the Mavs to 33 wins in his Rookie of the Year campaign, followed by a 43-win season and a postseason berth.

Most recently, Dallas won 42 wins in a shortened season that marked a third consecutive season in which they improved their win percentage (.402 to .573 to .583). Doncic is only getting better at 23 years old, and we expect Dallas to improve after adding Reggie Bullock in free agency. Under Jason Kidd, 50 wins is certainly within reach for a Mavericks team led by the league’s best young player. Doncic hasn’t given us any reason to bet against him on this prop at betting sites, and we’re not going to start now.

Detroit Pistons

Pistons Over 23.5 Wins

The Odds: -122 at FanDuel

With the 2018 Sixers excluded, teams that have held the first overall pick in the draft the last five seasons have averaged 26.4 wins. The Pistons are right in line with that average, with a major caveat that they’ve got a head start thanks to ultra-blue chip prospect Cade Cunningham. The 6-foot-8 point guard from Oklahoma State is as good a prospect as we’ve seen since Zion Williamson — and he should have an instant effect on a Pistons team that actually has a few core pieces already in place.

They’re not going to be competing with the Nets and Bucks in the East, but don’t overlook Saddiq Bey, Isaiah Stewart and Killian Hayes as far as getting past this win total is concerned. Looking for someone to get them over the hump? How about 2021 Most Improve Player finalist Jerami Grant. Detroit won 20 games a season ago, and Cunningham is in a prime spot to make an instant impact. We love his odds, especially at Michigan sports betting sites.

Golden State Warriors

Warriors Over 47.5 Wins

The Odds: -110 at DraftKings

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson haven’t played a full season together since 2019, when they lost to the Raptors in the 2019 NBA Finals. In the six previous years that the Splash Brothers have played a full season together, the Warriors won 51, 67, 73, 67, 58 and 57 games. We don’t expect this year’s Warriors to look like the dynasty version that we saw in the late 2010s, but a healthy Curry and Thompson and a supporting cast that’s deeper than first glance will have them fighting for home-court advantage in the Western Conference.

If there was a silver lining to the 15-win 2020 campaign or the 39-win 2021 campaign, it’s that current rotation players like Jordan Poole and Juan Toscano-Anderson were thrust into significant roles that should make them more valuable in 2022. First-round picks Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody give Golden State excellent depth and potential. That’s not to mention Andrew Wiggins, who quietly put together a career year in 2021. Even with Thompson back healthy, there’s a part for Wiggins to play to help Golden State reach 50 wins and hit the over on this wager we found on top betting apps.

Cleveland Cavs

Cavs Over 27.5 Wins

The Odds: -105 at PointsBet

Though some of the most recent LeBron-less Cavs teams were led by a Kyrie Irving, none have had the depth of young talent like this year’s edition. It’s led by a dynamic backcourt duo of Collin Sexton (24.3 points last season) and Darius Garland (17.4 points and 6.1 assists).

Speaking of defense, Cleveland’s historically bad group will see an improvement after it drafted USC center Evan Mobley with the third pick. The 7-footer averaged 2.9 blocks for the Trojans as a freshman and will fit perfectly alongside Jarrett Allen, who the Cavs gave $100 million to in August. Twenty-eight wins isn’t a stretch for the talent they’ve put together over the last three Lotteries. We expect them to flirt with 30 wins and hit this over with room to spare.

Pelicans

Pelicans Under 39.5 Wins

The Odds: -110 at DraftKings

You won’t find a betting analyst who loves Zion Williamson more than this one, but it’s a bit concerning that the talented forward broke his foot this offseason and isn’t a lock to begin the regular season healthy. Injuries have plagued the 22-year-old who averaged 27.0 points on 61% shooting last season — and the Pellies are in trouble if they don’t have their leading scorer from a season ago: New Orleans is 21-38 in two seasons without him in the lineup. It’s enough to make Louisiana sports betting fans queasy.

Even if Williamson is healthy to begin the year, he’s naturally going to miss some games. We don’t love this team’s depth, and Williamson and Brandon Ingram are going to have to do some seriously heavy lifting. That’s a recipe for disaster in the gauntlet of the Western Conference, especially for a first-year head coach in Willie Green. We’ll take the under here as the Pelicans head to the Lottery for a fourth straight season.
