Minnesota Vikings NFL Draft Odds: Rebuilding Defense Top Priority
The stuck-in-limbo Minnesota Vikings have won 7-8 games in three of the four seasons with Kirk Cousins at QB. The offense has ranked higher in yards gained than points scored, and the defense has been bottom-10 in both yards and points the last two seasons.
Minnesota’s skill players set can compete with any other team’s unit, but that hasn’t paid the ball. Rebuilding the defense is a priority for new coach Kevin O’Connell.
Bookies.com oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed who the Vikings are most likely to choose with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Minnesota Vikings 1st Round Pick Odds (No. 12)
|Derek Stingley, CB||LSU||-110|
|Jermaine Johnson, Edge||Florida St.||+400|
|Ahmad Gardner, CB||Cincinnati||+450|
|Tyler Linderbaum, C||Iowa||+550|
|Andrew Booth, CB||Clemson||+700|
Who Will The Vikings Take In The NFL Draft?
While the Vikings have questions on their interior offensive line, it’s the defense that has kept the team back. Minnesota added two starting linebackers in free agency and a defensive tackle.
Cornerback is a spot of major concern – starter Bashaud Breeland ranked bottom-five among CB starters and Mackensie Alexander was the last-ranked nickel CB.
Edge rusher is another need, and this draft is full of them. Minnesota’s conversion from a 4-3 defense to 3-4 under O’Connell offers another reason to find pass rushers.
Derek Stingley Odds to Join the Minnesota Vikings
Cornerback makes the most sense for a team that struggled mightily at that position. Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner could go as high as No. 4 to the Jets, or drop to Minnesota at No. 12. Stingley, the No. 2 CB in the class, should be there.
Stingley was an All-American at LSU in 2019 before injuries limited his action the last two seasons. He’s considered healthy, however, and has the premier man coverage chops to be an immediate improvement at the Vikings’ biggest problem spot.
Add to it that his former defensive coordinator at LSU, Daronte Jones, is now the defensive backs coach at Minnesota, and it adds a personal touch that makes it unlikely Stingley drops past No. 12.
