Jay Gruden had been the favorite to be the first NFL coach fired during the 2019 season. On Monday morning, the Washington Redskins gave Gruden his walking papers after Sunday’s 33-7 loss to the Patriots left the Redskins 0-5.

Washington has lost seven straight going back to last season. Bill Callahan, the team’s offensive line coach and assistant head coach, will lead the Redskins against the winless Miami Dolphins in Week 6.

Now that Gruden is out of the mix, which coach now sits on the hottest seat? Here are the top five candidates to be the next to go as Week 6 looms.

NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat

Dan Quinn, Falcons

Quinn led the Falcons to the Super Bowl just three seasons ago, but last year was a big disappointment and this year has been even worse.

That said, the defensive playcaller better get his resume updated. Oh wait, that’s Quinn, too. Quinn canned much of his staff after last season and took over a defense that didn’t get it done as Matt Ryan and the offense has piled up the points. At this point, only the Dolphins allow more than the 30.4 ppg of the Falcons. Things bottomed out Sunday in a 53-32 loss to the Texans, as Deshaun Watson carved them up, passing 28-of-33 for 426 yards, five TDs and no INTs.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank gave a vote of confidence to Quinn after Sunday’s meltdown. We’ll see how long that lasts if the defensive woes continue.

Here’s why he’s likely the coach to go: The Falcons’ vaunted offense ranks 10th in yards but just 21st in points, and that’s after going off for 32 on Sunday. The defense that Quinn has taken a hands-on approach is not producing, either. The Falcons have a lot of talent and high expectations.

After playing at Arizona on Sunday, the Falcons host the Rams and Seahawks. If things don’t turn around soon, Atlanta might be the next team to make a head coach move.

Mike Tomlin, Steelers

Tomlin is considered one of the NFL’s top coaches, and he has a Super Bowl championship under his belt.

But something’s not right in Pittsburgh. Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell each did whatever they had to do to get out of town. The defense is a mess and Ben Roethlisberger won’t play this year. Pittsburgh appears on the verge of a total rebuild. Tomlin would likely be offered a job within hours of leaving Steel City, but that doesn’t mean a change of scenery isn’t in the best interest of the team, especially if the season continues to go south.

Jason Garrett, Cowboys

It seems Garrett is always on this list, yet he’s been the head coach in Dallas since 2010, with four winning seasons and three playoff berths over the last five years.

Dallas is 3-2 this year but it’s built to win, and Sunday’s 34-24 loss to the Packers – the Cowboys trailed 31-3 at one point before rallying, and he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct – won’t help matters. It’s unlikely Garrett is shown the door mid-season, but if the Cowboys don’t at least get to the NFC Championship, he might be gone before the Super Bowl.

Adam Gase, Jets

It’s arguably unfair to have a coach on the list who lost his starting QB to mono. But the Jets had high hopes and they’re clearly not close to getting there. The Jets are averaging 9.8 points per game and rank dead-last in yards.

Of the three coaches in their first year with teams who have yet to taste success – Miami’s Brian Flores and Cincinnati’s Zac Taylor also lead winless teams – Gase had the highest expectations for 2019. If any of the three are on the hot seat, Gase is it.

Mike Zimmer, Vikings

Zimmer likely isn’t going anywhere. Two seasons ago he led the Vikings to a 13-3 record and NFC Championship Game berth.

The team went all-in for a Super Bowl in 2018, signing Kirk Cousins to a huge deal and shoring up issues on the lines. But instead of taking that final step, Minnesota went backward, finishing 8-7-1 and out of the postseason.

The team is again considered a title contender, but a 16-6 loss to the Bears showcased a lot of flaws, as did a Week 2 defeat to the rival Packers. Of course, the main issue has been Cousins, who hasn’t performed well enough in the big games. If the team can’t figure out how to get Cousins on track, the offensive coordinator might be the first to go, but Zimmer might be the next head to roll.
