The National Hockey League, the most prestigious ice hockey league in the world, has fans all over the globe betting on games, making it extremely lucrative for many of the 32 team owners.

With this in mind, we wanted to find out how wealthy the NHL teams will be in five years’ time. We analyzed data from 2012 to 2019 to forecast the teams’ financial futures and to determine which team is expected to be the richest of them all.

NHL Teams at the Top of the Rich List

The Montreal Canadiens are set to be the richest NHL team by revenue in 2025 if they play their cards right, potentially raking in more than $327 million per year. The New York Rangers come in second, but the gap between them and the Canadiens could be relatively tight as the Rangers are predicted to earn $325.09 million.

In third place are the Boston Bruins, closely followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Again, the numbers are tight - the Maple Leafs currently earn more than the Bruins, so the rankings are fluid.

Rounding out the top five of the NHL rich list is the Chicago Blackhawks, who are predicted to reach $285.34 million by 2025.

The Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals come in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. The Philadelphia Flyers are predicted to jump from $212.68 million in 2021 to $264.6 million by 2025, with the No. 10-ranked St. Louis Blues close behind, predicted to make $252.3 million.

The two Canada-based teams may benefit from single-game Canada sports betting now being legal, with Quebec and Ontario sports betting fans sure to wager on their teams at local sportsbooks.

Teams Set to Bring in the Least Revenue

At the other end of the spectrum, the Vegas Golden Knights are predicted to earn the least by 2025 - although they are still at a healthy $89 million. The Golden Knights made $141 million in 2021 but are set to decrease in value over the years, losing money every single year. Interestingly, Las Vegas isn’t doing well in the NFL Rich List either, as they’re predicted to rank at the bottom in 2025 in that as well.

The Arizona Coyotes rank second from bottom but are still predicted to make $128.71 million by 2025. Could that grow with Arizona sports betting launching? The Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators and the Columbus Blue Jackets round out the bottom five teams.

Revealed: The NHL Rich List 1

Methodology

To determine how much NHL teams are set to earn by 2025, we used Forbes data and web archives to look at NHL teams and their revenue in millions for the years 2012-2019 (2020 was excluded due to COVID). We then used this data with the Excel forecast function to generate predicted revenue for 2021-2025, and then ranked teams based on their predicted revenue for 2025.

*The Vegas Golden Knights first played in the 2017-18 season, hence there is no revenue data available for them before 2018. Also, the Seattle Kraken do not feature on this list as the 2021-22 season will be their first in the NHL.
