BetMGM Mobile Sports Betting App Coming To Indiana Tuesday
The BetMGM mobile sports betting app licensed through Belterra Resort Indiana can launch on Tuesday, according to the state gaming commission.
The Roar Digital product received final approval on Monday, according to a release from Indiana Gaming Commission executive director Sara Gonso Tait.
The BetMGM mobile platform would represent the fifth in Indiana, leaving six sportsbooks and licensed racinos without an online offering. BetMGM would join market-leader DraftKings, whose mobile platform accounted for $65,993,539 of Indiana sportsbooks’ total handle of $170,813,254 in January, FanDuel ($49,519,651), BetRivers ($7,770,033) and BetAmerica ($89,622).
Indiana Sports Betting Bolstered by Illinois
Mobile wagering is available state-wide in Indiana, but DraftKings’ location at Ameristar Casino in the Chicago exurbs has proved advantageous. Illinois has not rolled out legal wagering despite legalizing the industry this summer. Not surprisingly, the closest sportsbook to Chicago — Horseshoe Hammond, which has no mobile or online presence — led Indiana in January retail handle ($13,705,355) by a wide margin.
Belterra Casino is located north of the Ohio River, opposite Kentucky and approximately 50 miles southwest of Cincinnati.
BetMGM Making Moves in Competitive Wagering Arena
Roar, which is a collaboration between MGM Resorts International and United Kingdom-based tech giant GVC Holdings, received a temporary vendor license in Indiana on Jan. 13. MGM Resorts operates legacy properties including the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand in Las Vegas and Borgata in Atlantic City, N.J., making the partnership with GVC a reach for the expanding American market expected and so far dominated by mobile betting.
MGM Resorts president William Hornbuckle said during a Q4, 2019 earnings call in mid-February that the union should yield profit between 2023-2025, after the partners invest up to $30 million each yearly until then.
BetMGM, which launched an app in West Virginia this January, has a powerful partner in Verizon, which bought Yahoo Sports and debuted an online sportsbook through the media brand. Yahoo Sportsbook powered by BetMGM is currently available in New Jersey.
Hornbuckle said in the earnings call that he hopes to have BetMGM in eight states by the end of 2020, which seems reasonable considering MGM has market access to 16 states through its own properties and a multi-regimen market-access agreement with Boyd Gaming announcement in 2018.
Also in January, Roar was named the official gaming partner of the National Lacrosse League in a deal where it will set betting lines for the niche sport.
