Harry Maguire Transfer Should Shift Manchester United Odds

Manchester United stole the transfer window spotlight by signing center back Harry Maguire for $97.15 million (£80 million), a world record for a defender.

The signing is likely to shift the odds of Man Utd’s finish in the Premier League. Going into the day, United’s odds to win the Premier League could be found at +3300. However, the starting CB for England will provide some much-needed support on a back line that allowed 54 goals last season.

Does Maguire Make United a Top-4 Favorite?

The odds after United announced the Maguire signing reveal that the Red Devils are now the fourth favorite to finish in the Top 4 in the upcoming season.

With United +100, only Man City (-5000), Liverpool (-1250), and Tottenham (-177) sit ahead for a Top-4 finish. United's +3300 odds to win the Premier League are tied with Chelsea, who will be breaking in its own superstar signing in American Christian Pulisic.

United's signing of Maguire breaks the record of $91 million (£75 million) when Liverpool signed center back Virgil van Dijk from Southampton. Van Dijk turned out to be worth every penny for Liverpool during their run to the Champions League title last season.

Some eyebrows will be raised at the price of Maguire, especially considering he’s already 26 years of age. Juventus paid nearly $82 million (£67.5 million) for 20 year-old Dutch center back Matthijs de Ligt earlier this summer, and he was one of the biggest stars in a surprise Ajax team that only lost to Tottenham in the Champions League semi-final.

Maguire will definitely shift the odds more than Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who signed with Man United in late June. The $54.6 million (£45 million) transfer price for Wan-Bissaka broke another record this window: The most expensive English player to be uncapped at the time of transfer.

Manchester City Remains the Favorite

Despite movement around the rest of the league, Man City remains the favorite to win the Premier League this season at -200, and very few moves that Man U could make would do much to change that. City ended up adding Spanish midfielder Rodri for $75.3 million (£62 million) to cement its place as the favorite.

Liverpool's odds are sliding, but remain second favorite at +275, with Tottenham trailing in a distant third at +1800. Liverpool saw very little transfer movement, with the departure of Daniel Sturridge being the biggest transfer-related news to come out of the Reds’ camp.

Tottenham’s odds took a hit when right full-back Kieran Trippier was sold to Atletico Madrid for $24.3 million (£20 million). Spurs' big signing was French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for $66.8 million (£55 million), but none to make up for the loss of one of their stalwart fullbacks.

Rounding out the top six making moves this transfer window is Arsenal. The Gunners still trail the other teams at the top of the league at +5000 to win it all and is +125 to finish in the Top 4, despite competing the shock transfer of wing Nicolas Pepe for $87.4 million (£72 million).

Arsenal is reportedly still looking for center backs, but look unlikely to fill the position that many fans believe is the most barren on the team.

Chelsea, under a transfer ban, only brought in Pulisic in a move completed before the ban was handed down. The Blues sit at +110 for a Top-4 finish this season.
