Laver Cup Odds Favor Team Europe Ahead Of Team World
The Laver Cup gets underway this Friday in Geneva and Team Europe are already the heavy favorites among bookmakers to claim victory.
This is only the third year of the Laver Cup, which pits a team of Europe’s best male tennis players against those from the rest of the world.
Yet Team Europe have dominated on both previous occasions and are expected to secure a third-straight victory this week.
Bookmakers 888Sport have priced Team Europe as the -400 favorites to clinch the title this year. As for Team World, they are out at +300. Incidentally, these are almost the exact odds given to both teams before the first Laver Cup in 2017.
What is the Laver Cup?
If you’re unfamiliar with the Laver Cup, it works a lot like golf’s Ryder Cup in that individual players compete in matches to win points for their teams. A win on Day 1 earns your team one point, on Day 2 two points, and on Day 3 three points. There are three singles matches and one doubles match in each of the three days of competition.
Whichever team earns the most wins - and therefore points - over the three-day tournament wins the Laver Cup. The mark both teams are aiming for is an unsurmountable 13 points.
Who is Competing in the Laver Cup?
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were the first players to confirm their commitment to Team Europe. Between them, they boast 39 Grand Slam singles titles. Austria’s Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev of Germany and Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas are also included. Italian Fabio Fognini completes the team, while Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut is the reserve.
Tsitsipas and Zverev are seen as players who could one day take over the mantle from the likes of Federer and Nadal. As for Thiem, the clay expert can still hold his own on hard courts but did crash out of the U.S. Open first round this year.
As for Team World, they have the big-serving John Isner as their top-ranked player. But the big draw is Canada’s slick operator Milos Raonic, and Australian firebrand Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios — along with American Jack Sock and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov — have competed in the previous two Laver Cups.
All seven of Team Europe’s players are inside the world’s top 11 on the ATP rankings. Isner is Team World’s top-ranked player at 20.

Memorable Laver Cup Matches
There have been some classic Laver Cup matches over the first two years of the tournament's existence, the pinnacle being Federer and Nadal playing doubles together to beat Sam Querrey and Jack Sock in 2017.
Isner’s two-set victory over Nadal in the singles that year was also a memorable clash.
Last year Kevin Anderson beat Novak Djokovic in a 10-6 mini set to stun the Serb, while the South African also teamed up with Sock to beat Djokovic and Federer in the doubles.
