We've moved on from the time when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had a stranglehold on the Ballon d'Or award. The pair won it five times each from 2008 to 2017, with Messi going on to win it a further three times. Last year's winner, Rodri, had his season cut short by injury and has failed to make the shortlist. Runner-up Vinicius Jr has, but he finds himself a long way behind the market principals on most betting apps.

Dembele Or Yamal To Win 2025 Ballon d'Or?
Probably the correct favourite for the award, Ousmane Dembélé has fulfilled all the promise that had Europe’s major clubs chasing his signature during his time at Dortmund. He has been in unstoppable form since the turn of the year, finishing the season with 35 goals and 16 assists in 53 appearances.
Dembélé’s season hasn’t just been about individual accomplishments either, with PSG picking up the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Champions League for an historic treble. He has team success on his CV to go along with what he has achieved on a personal level. Lamine Yamal is a player with the footballing world at his feet. The 18-year-old has sparkled for both club and country in the last year, scoring two goals for Spain to send them to the Nations League final and helping Barcelona to a League and Cup domestic double.
As good as he has been, Dembele’s claim to the award looks just that little bit stronger. Yamal only scoring 18 goals in all competitions last season, and not having a Champions League winner's medal to his name will probably prevent him picking up the award. The odds at our list of betting sites could have looked very different if he had chosen to head to the corner flag in the last minute of the Champions League tie with Inter Milan.

PSG Players Dominate Nominations
When a team dominates all before them in the Champions League and then does so in the corresponding Club World Cup - all before the final, that is - it should come as no surprise that lots of players are then up for the Ballon D’or. That is exactly what has happened with PSG, who transformed from every person’s pet hated club to the neutrals’ darlings last year under Luis Enrique.
PSG have nine players on the laughably named shortlist for the award, with five of them all in the initial top 10 of the betting at top UK betting sites. The obvious winner is Dembele after his remarkable second half to last season, but in Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, the French and European champions have a core that could continue dominating on the pitch and in nominations like this for years to come.

Salah and Liverpool Teammates Feature Prominently
Mohamed Salah played a huge part in Liverpool romping to the Premier League title last term, scoring 29 goals and grabbing a further 18 assists, so it’s no surprise he is once again nominated for Ballon d’Or. The Egyptian bagged an incredible total of 57 goals and assists combined across all competitions, although he failed to make an impact in the Champions League last-16 defeat to eventual winners PSG, which has likely harmed his odds at new betting sites.
He is third-favourite behind Dembele and Yamal, and that would represent his best-ever finish in the prestigious award, having previously come fifth in both 2019 when Liverpool won the Champions League and again in 2022 when the Reds won the domestic cup double.
Salah is joined on the list by Liverpool teammates Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister, both of whom were pivotal in the Premier League title win, whilst new signing Florian Wirtz is also nominated after an impressive season at Bayer Leverkusen saw him score 10 goals and add 12 assists.

Scott McTominay and Other Ballon d'Or Dark Horses
Not many could have predicted the kind of debut season Scott McTominay had at Napoli. Having led the Naples side to Serie A glory, the Scot was named Serie A MVP for the season, immediately establishing himself as a club hero. He's an outsider to win the Ballon d'Or with football betting sites, but the fact that he's in the running for it alone is an accomplishment.
Cole Palmer and Declan Rice have been shortlisted too, though they're not among the favourites to win it. Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham are sure to have their supporters too, but likely didn't have strong enough seasons to be considered likely winners.
