Just under a year after he was hired, Valerien Ismael has been fired by Blackburn Rovers with the club languishing in the relegation zone. The Frenchman took over from John Eustace at the end of February 2025, picking up just two points from his first seven games. However, he led the club to four wins and a draw to end the season as they fell just two points short of the playoffs.
Rovers faithful will have been hoping that was a sign of things to come, but that hasn't been the case this campaign, with Ismael managing just seven wins all term - four of which came in a five-game span across October and November.
A number of the usual names have already been linked to the vacant position, including the likes of Russell Martin, Will Still, Slaven Bilic and Gary Rowett, but it remains to be seen whether any of them would want the challenge of keeping Rovers up.

Tony Mowbray In Line for Blackburn Return
Tony Mowbray was the last manager to represent true stability at Blackburn, spending five-and-a-half years at the club between 2017 and 2022. He led the club to League One promotion in his debut season then established Rovers as a midtable Championship team before leaving at the expiration of his contract.
The Lancashire side have gone through three permanent managers since then, with only Jon Dahl Tomasson (20 months) lasting more than a year. Rehiring Mowbray may add some much-needed steadiness to a club in freefall.

Slaven Bilic Linked to Ewood Park
Slaven Bilic is a name familiar to football fans in the UK and those who have kept an eye on virtually every new manager betting market in the Championship over the last couple of years. He had spells at West Ham and Everton as a player and West Ham, West Brom and Watford as a manager. He also got West Brom promoted so knows his way around the Championship.

Is David Wagner the Man for Rovers?
David Wagner has been out of a job for almost two years since being fired by Norwich City in May 2024 after losing in the play-off semi-finals to Leeds United. The German has a strong record in the Championship, all told, with that season at the Canaries coming seven years after he took Huddersfield Town to the Premier League in his first full campaign there.

Blackburn Legend Damien Duff Amongst Favourites
Former players always feature prominently in the next manager betting, so it’s no surprise to see Damien Duff pushing for favouritism. The Irish winger made over 150 appearances for the club, graduating from the team’s youth academy before joining Chelsea for a big fee.
