Tommy Fleetwood Top PGA Tour Bet at Players Championship

Tiger Woods is sidelined by a back injury, but his absence doesn’t dull the luster of The Players Championship. The PGA Tour’s annual trip to the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is where the golf betting season hits high gear, with the Masters just one month away.

As usual the field is loaded, topped by world No. 1 and defending champion Rory McIlroy. Outside of Woods and Lee Westwood, the rest of the world’s top 30 will be teeing it up in Ponte Vedra, Florida. And yet, perhaps because of a somewhat gimmicky Pete Dye layout defined by water and railroad ties, longshots occasionally break through — such as Kim Si-Woo in 2017, Tim Clark in 2010, Stephen Ames in 2006 and Craig Perks in 2002.

But the nature of golf’s strongest field makes it more likely that a bigger name will raise the Tiffany and Co. trophy on Sunday evening. McIlroy is the odds favorite at +700 according to Unibet, followed by Jon Rahm at +1000. Here are your best bets:

Bet 1: Tommy Fleetwood To Win

Having played primarily in Europe, Fleetwood is still looking for his first victory on the PGA Tour. He has come close and finished third in the Honda Classic just two weeks ago. Fleetwood held a one-stroke lead entering the final round, shot a closing 71, and found water on the last hole, dooming his chances of catching first-time winner Sungjae Im.

He missed the cut last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but Fleetwood played two weeks of strong golf before that and he has an excellent track record in Ponte Vedra. He tied for fifth and for seventh the past two years and scored in the 60s in five of his past eight rounds at TPC Sawgrass. The Englishman is overdue to win on U.S. soil and presents excellent golf futures betting value for someone with a recent history of contending in Ponte Vedra.

Bet 2: Adam Scott Top 5

Tommy Fleetwood Top PGA Tour Bet at Players Championship 1

Speaking of players with a history of contending at Sawgrass, Scott has been excellent on the Stadium Course, finishing no worse than 12th since 2016 and winning there in 2004. Five of his past eight rounds at the Players have been in the 60s. Among golfers who have played the tournament at least 10 times, only Sergio Garcia has a better average finish.

Scott also won last month at Riviera. Like Fleetwood, Scott missed the cut last week. But even good players occasionally miss cuts, so don’t make too much of that unless an injury is involved. But Scott is healthy and presents the combination of track record and tournament experience that makes him worth considering in an event where he has finished T12, T11 and T6 over the past three years.

Bet 3: Dustin Johnson Top 10

Why isn’t Johnson among the favorites to win? Likely because D.J. hasn’t played since WGC-Mexico in February, where he faded to 48th in an event he had recently dominated. His best result this year was a 10th in the Genesis Invitational in early February.

But even for a big hitter like Johnson, water-laden TPC Sawgrass has been a very comfortable place — he finished tied for fifth there last year, tied for 18th in 2018 and tied for 12th in 2017. Seven of his past nine rounds at Sawgrass have been in the 60s, including all four last season. Johnson has had a couple of bad rounds keep him from good finishes — a 78 on Sunday doomed him at Pebble Beach and he never recovered from an opening 76 in Mexico. But with a little consistency, Johnson could be right in the mix this week.
