2023 French Open Overview – Men's Title Favorites

Novak Djokovic

Equally, seeking to make history on his terms, is 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Admittedly, nothing would give the reigning Australian Open champion greater pleasure than to beat his rival Nadal to the post by becoming the winningest player in the history of the men’s game.

However, somewhat ironically, the Serbian star’s form is questionable, too. With a less than stellar (by his lofty standards) European clay swing -- Djokovic was upset in the R16 of the Monte Carlo Masters (l. to Musetti) and then in the quarterfinals of the Serbian Open (l. to Lajovic) – and a bout with an elbow injury that saw him skip Madrid, he has one final opportunity left at the Rome Masters to hone his craft.

You can bet all eyes will be on Djokovic and how he performs in Rome.  Right now, he’s the second-best bet at +1700 at Caesars after Spain’s rising star and the 2022 US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz. It goes without saying, winning the Italian Masters would see his betting odds improve.

Carlos Alcaraz

In the meantime, Alcaraz has established himself as the player to beat and he's +110 at FanDuel . Three of his four titles this season came on clay, including two from the European swing: Barcelona and Madrid.

If the prodigal 20-year-old extends his current undefeated run on the red dirt by winning in Rome, he’ll almost certainly cement his status as the player to beat in Paris as he attempts to win his second major title.

The Field

It's worth noting, however, that there are multiple players with a legitimate shot to win the men’s singles title.

Some of these are Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune, and Casper Ruud as per the sports betting exchange. (See the ATP French Open outright odds below).

2023 French Open Overview –  Women's Title Favorites

Iga Swiatek

On the women’s front, three-time Grand Slam champion and the current title-holder Iga Swiatek is looking to become the first player to win back-to-back French Opens since Justine Henin won three in a row (2005-07).

Swiatek is odds-on at -137 at Caesars to win her second straight and third overall Frenchy.

Aryna Sabalenka

The 2023 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Swiatek in the Madrid final this month, lurks as the next-best bet in the outrights – albeit a distant +650 at FanDuel

The Belarussian is seeking to become the first player since Naomi Osaka (2020 US Open and 2021 Australian Open) to win consecutive Grand Slams.

The Field

While 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova (+1600), 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina (+2100) and 2022 French Open runner-up Coco Gauff (+2900) are among some of the top contenders to watch for the women’s single’s title. (See more WTA French Open outright odds below).

How to Choose the Best Promo for Tennis Betting

This is not the case of one size fits all. Choosing a sportsbook and promotion that best fits your needs is a personal choice.

As far as sportsbooks are concerned, look for one that rates high in the sportsbook reviews, offers a wide selection of betting types (including live betting), has secure and safe banking transactions, and delivers a top-notch mobile app.

In terms of promo codes, no two promotions are identical. Every promo code offer comes with its own set of terms and conditions, which we strongly advise bettors to go over thoroughly and understand before claiming any offer.

Ultimately, bettors will have their individual set of criteria against which they must weigh up against both of these important criteria. The rule of thumb: always stay within your means and gamble responsibly.

How to Bet the French Open

Tennis markets are among the best sports betting markets to trade at the sportsbook exchange. The sport itself is easy to understand, and simple to analyze and the season runs almost year-round with tournaments held around the world.

The biggest of which – and the prize most coveted – are the Grand Slams: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

In terms of placing wagers, tennis is relatively inexpensive to bet on, there are a wide assortment of betting options that you can place on a single game, set or tournament, and (something that is often overlooked) it’s one of the best sports for live betting as well.

Here is a list of some of the key tennis bets you can make.

Outright Betting – this is a future bet where you can place a wager on the overall tournament winner. For example, you can bet on Carlos Alcaraz (+125 with FanDuel) to win the men’s French Open title or on Iga Swiatek (-137 with Caesars). The bet wins if you back the correct player, simple as.

Match Betting – this is a straight up bet where you can bet on the result of a single match (Player A vs Player B) rather than the entire tournament. One player is going to be the favorite (odds indicated by a “-“ sign) and the other the underdog (odds indicated by a “+” sign).

For example,  in a matchup between Francis Tiafoe (-175) and Daniel Altmaier (+135), you can bet on either player to win the match. The bet wins if you back the correct player, simple as.

Handicap Betting – handicap betting is not unlike spread betting in other sports. In tennis, the handicap usually revolves around the games of a set but it can also revolve around sets.A games handicap will look as follows: Tiafoe -2.5 (-115) vs Altmaier +2.5 (-115).

There are two betting options here:  a) backing the American Tiafoe to win by 2.5 games or more than his German counterpart or b) backing Altmaier to win 2.5 fewer games than Tiafoe.  If the final score is 6-4, 6-2 in Tiafoe’s favor and you backed him on the -2.5 line, you will win. (Tiafoe won 12 games and Altmaier 6, which is a six-game margin that is greater than the 2.5 line needed to cover).

Alternatively, if Tiafoe wins the match 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, then he will lose the match on the handicap (Tiafoe 18 games to Altmaier’s 16 yields a two-game margin).

Over/Under Betting – betting the total in tennis involves betting on the number of games or sets involved. For example, the over/under games total for Tiafoe vs Altmaier is set to 22.5, with the over-juiced to +100 and the under-juiced to -130.

If the final score is 6-4, 6-2 in Tiafoe’s favor, then the game's total (12 +6=18) falls under the closing 22.5 total. Thus, the under would be the winning bet. Alternatively, if the final score is 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 (18+16=34) then the game's total goes over the closing total. Thus, the over would be the winning bet.

Correct Score – Predicting the correct score is one of the more challenging bets to make in tennis. Here a bettor must predict the winner and the correct score of a set or match.

An example of the correct score to win the match is Tiafoe 2-0  (+115) or 2-1 (+250).

In-Play Betting – in-play or live betting is the most fun. The options are endless and bettors can bet on just about anything and everything during a live match.

Some of these options include betting on whether a player will serve an ace or double fault on a particular point or the outcome of the game and set.

Tips for Betting the French Open

Tennis betting is nuanced, underscored by a variety of factors such as surface, form, travel, ranking head-to-heads, home advantage, tournament level and so on.

These will have an impact (one way or another) on players’ performance and the outcomes of matches.

Below, we explore several of these betting tips to keep in mind when betting on any tennis tournament.

Knowing a player – Each player has his own set of strengths and weaknesses and unique style of play. What’s more, they’ll have their preferred surfaces as well. Some thrive on slower surfaces while others thrive on faster one.

The best players in the game, however, tend to play well on all surfaces. Therefore, knowing players is the first step toward a successful tennis betting strategy. Here, you will want to look at their rankings, head-to-head matchups, past records at an event and so on.

Surface – Clay, Grass and Hard courts are the three primary surfaces of tennis courts. Each has its own set of unique characteristics that impact the ball’s speed, bounce and other behaviors. These in turn will impact a player’s performance and style of play.

Clay is a gritty surface comprised of crushed brick, stone or shale. It is the slowest of the three primary surfaces and causes the ball to bounce higher than  it does on the other surfaces.

This surface typically favors players with a solid return game, exceptional defensive skills, great stamina and supreme fitness. Conversely, grass and hard courts are much faster and the ball bounces lower. Players with big serves and powerful groundstrokes tend to have the advantage over counterpunchers here.

It’s also worth noting that clay courts are more prevalent in Europe than America, giving European players a distinct advantage on this surface in particular over their American counterparts.

Form – Tennis is an individual sport and players are humans. It’s impossible for them to perform, therefore, at the same level each and every single week. Especially as they are piling on the air miles, jetting from country to country and continent to continent playing back-to-back tournaments.

Form (how well or poorly a player is playing at any given point in time) is a good indicator of their overall confidence and motivation ahead of a tournament.

How deep they go in a tournament, how many matches they’ve played in recent weeks and the amount of travel are bound to take their toll and lead to some fatigue as well.

The ATP and WTA website and app tracks every player’s record, making it easy to find this pertinent information and any stats and data associated with it. The last thing you want to do is bet on a player that hasn’t won a match in months and is riding on a six-game losing streak.

Tournament level – Tournaments are grouped into four categories according to the ranking points on offer – 250, 500, Masters (1000) and Grand Slams (2000). While upsets are not uncommon in tennis, winning the bigger events such as the Masters or  Grand Slams is extremely difficult.

This is particularly true of the men’s game over the last two decades, as evinced by the domination of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. Thus, backing the favorites at the big events is a good strategy.

Other variables – external factors such as weather (heat, wind, humidity), altitude, court (center or an outside court) and time (day or night) can have an impact on a match as well.

For instance, a lower-ranked player that isn’t used to playing on Philippe Chatrier would be overwhelmed by the sheer size of Roland Garros’ center court and the number of spectators in attendance, especially if it is his or her first time playing on a showpiece court.

The odds would stack up heavily against them if the matchup involved a top-ranked player big ticket-item such as Nadal or Djokovic.

Tennis is the fourth most popular sport worldwide after soccer, cricket and hockey, with the WTA and ATP Tours drawing over 1 billion fans globally. Having transcendent ambassadors such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic (The Big Three) and Serena Williams (the one and only), who have won an insane 87 Grand Slam titles combined, has helped raise the sport’s profile (on and off the court) over the last two decades.

But, lately, it’s the steady stream of emergent talent that is captivating the imagination of those fans, players such as Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka (to name a few), who’ve broken through on the Grand Slam stage to win the game’s most coveted titles; thus, promising tennis’ popularity will live on through them for years to come.

Parity is great for sport and for sports betting. Tennis enthusiasts and punters alike need new stars to root for and get behind, and having multiple players, each with a legitimate shot to win any tournament, including the four majors, is going to make for a nice change.

Though the three-way rivalry in the men’s game between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic and Serena’s dominance in the women’s game represents a unique era, the likes of which we may never see again in our lifetime.
