JETS vs. DOLPHINS ODDS

The Jets and Dolphins share a rich history of two AFC East foes dating back to the 60’s.

Joe Namath then Dan Marino helped fuel the success of both teams, and of course that monster Dolphins team in the early 70’s that won two Super Bowls. Both of these teams regularly competed for the division crown before the Patriots drafted Tom Brady.

Betting on the Dolphins and Jets hasn’t been an easy task, mainly because of how consistently good both teams were for so long. The Jets barely hold the ATS 54-51-1 but have lost the last three against Miami.

Looking at head to head matchups, the first part of the 2000’s leaned towards the Jets, with their playoff runs, while recently it’s switched back to Miami.

The Jets won 13 of 20 between 2000-2010, but the Dolphins won 10 of their last 20. The Dolphins did move ahead of the Jets this decade, making it an easier bet. However, they are in year one of a tank as of 2019, which should give bettors every indication to fade Miami moving forward.

One trend bettors can look at with these two teams, the likelihood of a season split. Six of the last ten seasons, the two teams split their matchups.

JETS vs. DOLPHINS History

The Jets came into the NFL in 1961, followed by the Dolphins in 1966. This ignited the rivalry that saw the Jets jump ahead pretty fast, cemented by their Super Bowl win in the ’68-’69 season.

But Miami reeled off two Super Bowls in the early 70’s, with one of those seasons being the lone perfect year in NFL history. Dan Marino took over in the early 80’s, as the Jets had Ken O’Brien.

Dolphins vs Jets 1

Heading into the 2000’s, both teams never found consistent play at the position, despite having success. The 1978 season saw a game between the two teams on December 20th with no announcers. It drew huge ratings.

JETS vs. DOLPHINS Memorable Games

Beyond the lone playoff game played by the Jets and Dolphins, there was plenty of regular season games with plenty of electricity. Two of which came in the same season, 1986.

The first game was an offensive explosion with the Jets winning 51-45, still the highest scoring game between the two teams.

O’Brien threw 4 TD’s, all to Wesley Walker, and Marino threw an amazing 6 TD’s in the losing effort.

Miami would get revenge later that year, blowing out the Jets 45-3. Marino effortlessly threw for 4 scores while staying under 300 passing yards.

In 1988 Marino was one of few QB’s to throw for 500 yards. The Dolphins were down, mainly because of Marino’s 5 INT, but managed to show some life. They came up short losing 44-30 even with Marino’s yardage.

They met again in the season finale in 1991 with a playoff berth on the line for the winner. The Jets won on the strength of K Raul Allegre’s two late kicks, one of them an OT game winner.

JETS vs. DOLPHINS Infamous Moments

Jets Strength Coach Sal Alosi was at the center of one of the rivalry’s ugliest moments. TV cameras caught Alosi tripping Dolphins player Nolan Carroll as he was returning a kick down the sidelines.

The NFL fined him 25k and suspended him for a couple of games, before making it indefinite.

Alosi was telling players to line up on the sidelines to impede players running back kicks and punts. The Jets were also fined for this incident.

The Jets swept the Dolphins in 2015 following a five-year run of the teams splitting the two games.

One of those ’15 losses came in London at Wembley Stadium. Miami lost 27-14 and proceeded to fire head coach Joe Philbin and offensive coordinator Kevin Coyle before they even made it back to the States.

JETS vs. DOLPHINS Notable Players

The biggest name will always be legendary coach Bill Parcells. He coached the Jets and was an executive for both teams, most recently the Dolphins.

Dolphins vs Jets 2

Hall of Famer Jason Taylor played for both the Jets and Dolphins, as did Nate Garner and Chad Pennington.
