Genius Sports on Tuesday announced a multiyear agreement with the British Columbia Lottery Corp. (BCLC) to support its operations as sportsbooks in Canada prepare to launch sports betting on single-game events.

The Lottery Corp. will use Genius Sports’ LiveData and LiveTrading services to deliver real-time official data and pricing on thousands of sporting events, including official data rights for the Canadian Premier League, English Premier League and Euroleague Basketball, among others, according to a news release.

Canadian sports betting could soon be a substantial market after the legislature in June amended the nation’s Criminal Code to allow for single-game sports wagering. The market could launch by the end of summer or early fall. Previously in Canada, bettors could only place parlay bets.

“BCLC’s partnership with Genius Sports demonstrates how the nascent Canadian sports betting industry already recognizes the importance of official data in helping to protect consumers whilst delivering the most secure and compelling products for their customers,” Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke said in the release.

“Products and services powered by the fastest, most accurate and reliable data will reinforce BCLC’s competitive advantage and help Canada fulfill the massive potential of its sports betting market.”

BC Lottery Oversees Gambling

The BCLC conducts and manages commercial gambling including casinos, lottery, bingo and British Columbia sports betting through multiple channels of distribution on behalf of the Province of British Columbia, Canada's third-largest by population with more than five million residents.

Earlier this year, Genius Sports announced a multiyear partnership with the NFL, making Genius the exclusive provider of NFL stats and NFL betting data. Previously, Sportradar had been the NFL’s sole data provider.

In its first quarter as a public company, Genius reported $53.7 million in quarterly revenue (net loss of $5.3 million). Genius raised its Fiscal Year 2021 group revenue guidance from $190 million to $250 million to $260 million.

Genius Sports has partnered with more than 400 sports organizations globally, including many of the world’s largest leagues and federations such as the NFL, EPL, FIBA, NCAA, NASCAR, AFA, and PGA for betting on golf.

Sportsbooks and betting apps in the United States like DraftKings and FanDuel are expected to enter Canada’s sports betting market when it goes live, along with Toronto-based The Score, among others.
