Kalvin Phillips was a superstar at Leeds United, but it’s fair to say that his Manchester City career hasn’t been plain sailing so far. Since the England midfielder arrived at the Etihad Stadium for £42m in July 2022, he has made just 12 appearances for the north-west giants, with speculation that the 27-year-old might be looking for a new club.

While Phillips has been injured for some of the past 12 months, he has also struggled to break into the first team when available. Ilkay Gundogan’s departure to Barcelona might lead to more game time for the midfielder, but there are clubs who will hope to wrest him away before deadline day on Friday 1 September.

Could Liverpool Tempt Phillips Away from City?

Kalvin Phillips will want to be a first-team regular this season considering that Euro 2024 is looming large on the horizon. The midfielder only made 12 appearances for Manchester City during the previous campaign, and he was regularly an unused squad player on matchday.

Could Liverpool offer him a way of playing more first-team football? They are among the favourites with football betting sites to sign Phillips should he leave City, with the Reds having already landed Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo this summer, and the latter could fill in the defensive midfield gap vacated by Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

However, Phillips would also be a strong midfield option, and it’s important to remember why Manchester City were prepared to spend £42m on his services in the first place. Liverpool could offer him the option to play a string of first-team games and return to the sort of form that he enjoyed at Leeds.

Brighton Might Throw Hat Into Ring for Phillips

Brighton have seen a number of high-profile players leave the AMEX Stadium this summer, with Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo among them. Although they have recruited James Milner, they could be interested in landing a player who is considerably younger and would fit into their style of play.

Financially, Brighton are in a good position after receiving over £100 million for Caicedo, and they might be prepared to break their transfer record once again. Having spent £30 million on acquiring the services of Joao Pedro, it might not be a surprise if they went even higher and landed the signature of someone who might need a change of club.

West Ham Looking for a Declan Rice Replacement

Declan Rice has left a big hole in the West Ham midfield, and perhaps David Moyes will look to fill the gap with Kalvin Phillips. Should the former Leeds United midfielder come available this summer, then the London outfit will have the funds from the sale of Rice to lodge a bid and add another England hopeful after recently capturing James Ward-Prowse.

Much depends on City’s willingness to sell Phillips along with the fact that the player might want to stay at a club that won a historic treble last season. However, the Hammers are certainly in the market for this type of midfield player, and they might make a late bid for him.
