Who Will Take Charge of Palace for 2023/24 Campaign?

Crystal Palace are considering their managerial options ahead of the 2023/24 football season. It initially appeared as though Roy Hodgson would remain in charge after successfully replacing Patrick Vieira towards the end of the previous campaign and steering the Eagles clear of danger.

However, the latest odds from the betting sites suggest it's not certain that Hodgson's services will be retained. There are rumours that Graham Potter could instead take charge at Selhurst Park, with the former Brighton and Chelsea boss eager to return to football management after a short spell out of the game.

Sports betting apps still have Hodgson as the most likely to take charge, although Palace chairman Steve Parish is now debating whether to stick with the tried and tested or alternatively opt for a different candidate such as Potter or even Brendan Rodgers, though he is likely to join Celtic.

Hodgson Favourite for Palace Job on Permanent Basis

The bookies currently have Roy Hodgson as their favourite to be given the reins for the 2023/24 season, with the 75-year-old having been brought back to the dugout when Palace's plight was looking serious with a few months of the previous campaign remaining.

Hodgson's return had a transformative effect on the team although some would argue that he replaced Patrick Vieira just as the fixtures started to improve for the London outfit, with the former England manager previously having a successful spell at Selhurst Park between 2017-2021.

At the end of the 2020/21 season, Hodgson left Palace with one eye on retirement. He did come back to the dugout to try to help Watford out of a tight squeeze a few months later, and his latest return to Selhurst suggests that his services might be in demand once again.

Potter on the Palace Manager Shortlist

If Hodgson isn't given the nod, then it's possible that Graham Potter will take charge of his third Premier League club in the space of 12 months. The former Swansea manager was in charge at Brighton at the beginning of the 2022/23 season before defecting to Chelsea, where he served an ill-fated spell before being given the heave-ho.

While Potter is a far richer man than he was a year ago, he will be keen to return to the dug out and rebuild his managerial reputation. The Englishman barely put a foot wrong at Brighton when transforming the Seagulls from relegation strugglers to top-half material, and he certainly laid the foundations for their success under Roberto De Zerbi.

The bookies think that Potter could end up being given the nod, and this is someone who could have a longer-term future at the club than Hodgson, with Chelsea going in hot pursuit of him last term before deciding he wasn't the right man for the job.

Could Rodgers Return to Dug Out at Selhurst?

Brendan Rodgers has now held a number of managerial roles in the Premier League, and it's perfectly possible that the Northern Irishman could be interested in taking charge at Crystal Palace. This is an ambitious top-flight club who finished 11th last season and will now be aiming for the European places next term.

However, it could be that the 50-year-old instead returns to Celtic as manager, with the Old Firm club reportedly having agreed terms with their former boss. Rodgers has a strong track record, including getting Swansea City promoted and then stabilised in the Premier League, with the former Leicester boss then heading to Anfield, and he had an attacking vibrant team that came within a whisker of landing the title. His time at Leicester City was also successful including a first ever FA Cup success.

The odds previously suggested that Rodgers can't be ruled out of the running, and he's also been linked with the vacant roles at Tottenham and Leeds since leaving the King Power Stadium. It's certainly an opportunity to reinvent himself after things went awry at Leicester last term.

Hutter Could Be in the Eagles Hunt

Adi Hutter has been in a number of manager betting markets before, with the bookies certainly respecting the Austrian's chances when it comes to securing the Crystal Palace role. The 53-year-old has been out of work since leaving Bundesliga team Borussia Monchengladbach last year, with Hutter looking for new opportunities.

There was a successful spell in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt between 2018 and 2021, with Hutter steering the German side to the semi-final stage of the Europa League during his time at the club. However, he was only able to engineer 10th place with Monchengladbach and is now a free agent.

With a spell previously being undertaken at Young Boys, Hutter is highly experienced and might be open to talks with Crystal Palace about becoming their new manager, although would he be regarded as too much of a risk?

Will Benitez Be The Next Palace Manager?

Rafael Benitez can often be found in the next manager markets with the bookies and the Spaniard has an outside chance of returning to the Premier League by taking charge at Crystal Palace. The Spaniard might welcome the chance to live in the capital and continue the good work of Roy Hodgson and Patrick Vieira.

Benitez has an enviable track record and has taken charge of some of the biggest football clubs in the world, with the Spaniard rising to prominence after his time with Valencia, while he has also held roles with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Internazionale.

Hasenhuttl Could Be a Runner for Palace Job

Ralph Hasenhuttl could yet return to the Premier League and many feel as though the Austrian wasn't given the financial backing that he needed at Southampton. Before the Saints' relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season, the manager had successfully kept the Hampshire outfit afloat for several seasons and we are sure to see the 55-year-old back before long.

The manager was in charge of RB Leipzig between 2016-18 and perhaps he will return to Germany, Austria or Switzerland for his next managerial role, although it would come as no surprise of Palace sounded him out regarding his availability to take charge of the reins at Selhurst Park.
