The best bookies were anticipating that Lee Cattermole was going to be announced as the next permanent manager of Middlesbrough FC, with the 34-year-old having been the odds-on favourite to replace Chris Wilder towards the end of last week.

However, it now appears that Michael Carrick is potentially in line to get the job instead. We know that the former Manchester United assistant coach has held talks with owner Steve Gibson, and it appears as though a deal could now be agreed which would see him take his first managerial job in English football.

As for Cattermole, he has been part of the Middlesbrough coaching staff for some time, and has enjoyed a meteoric rise at the Riverside, with the former midfielder potentially someone who could form part of Carrick's backroom team.

Next Permanent Middlesbrough Manager

The Premier League currently feels like a long way away for Middlesbrough considering that they sit 22nd in the Championship table. A recent win over Birmingham bumped them up the table, although consecutive defeats against Millwall and Blackburn means that they're in the relegation zone.

After having discussions with Michael Carrick in the past few days, it appeared that the former Tottenham and Manchester United player was in line to be given the nod at the Riverside, although Lee Cattermole became the bookmaker's favourite before drifting again. The 34-year-old has recently moved into an assistant coaching role at the club after Wilder's sacking, with the former midfielder now operating in a supporting role behind caretaker coach Leo Percovich.

Cattermole only recently retired as a player and joined Middlesbrough in January as an Under-18 coach. He has impressed behind the scenes and appears ambitious enough to be in the running to get the job on a permanent basis. The Stockton-born coach represented Middlesbrough as a player, and would certainly have the supporters behind him.

Could Michael Carrick Return to the North-East?

Michael Carrick is yet to dip his toe into the water as far as football management is concerned. The 41-year-old has previously been part of Manchester United's coaching staff, having worked with Louis van Gaal and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford although he is no longer on the Red Devils' payroll.

At the age of 41, Carrick might feel as though this is an opportunity to cut his teeth as a football manager, and he's originally from the north-east. Having turned out for Wallsend Boys Club in his youth, he was then snapped up by West Ham United before playing spells with Tottenham and Manchester United.

Carrick trades as the favourite for the vacant position and perhaps he's on a shortlist when it comes to taking charge and resurrecting the fortunes of this ailing team.

Rob Edwards Could Still Get the Job

It appears that Rob Edwards is the preferred choice of Middlesbrough's Head of Football, with Kieran Scott taking a shine to a manager who has previously steered Forest Green Rovers to promotion from League Two. Indeed, he was able to interview well enough to be handed the Watford manager's job last summer which was supposed to herald a new dawn for the club.

However, Edwards instead was sacked after taking charge for just a handful of games, with the 39-year-old now hoping to be given the nod at the Riverside, where he could aim to rebuild a squad and make it competitive in the Championship. The latest odds suggest that he is still in the running.

Carlos Corberan Could Be Set for Championship Return

Corberan punched well above his weight when steering Huddersfield Town to the Championship play-offs last season before the Terriers lost to Nottingham Forest. That 1-0 reverse was an unfortunate one although the Spaniard then stepped down from his position to take up a job at Olympiakos.

It was a short-lived stint in Greece for a manager who is now eyeing his next managerial opportunity. Having succeeded at Huddersfield, it might be that Middlesbrough represents the sort of profile that will attract Corberan, who would arguably inherit a more talented squad than the one he had in Yorkshire last season.

Sean Dyche Also Among Middlesbrough Betting Favourites

Another managerial vacancy means another opportunity for Sean Dyche to return to a dug out. It's probable that the former Burnley boss will be back in the game sooner rather than later, and he's had a few months off after being relieved of his Burnley duties last season.

We're expecting Dyche to attract interest from clubs such as Middlesbrough considering that he twice steered the Clarets to the Premier League and he was never blessed with a huge amount of spending money. He made Burnley tough defensively, and it could be a plausible way for Dyche to reignite his coaching career.

Boro have a big fanbase, and there will be a desire to put in a relatively safe pair of hands to ensure the Teeside club aren't in danger of playing League One football next term.

Leo Percovich Could Be Promoted From Within

The sacking of Chris Wilder means that we have Leo Percovich taking caretaker charge of Middlesbrough, and perhaps he can stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis. While caretaker managers don't generally get promoted from within, the Uruguayan has tremendous respect within the dressing room at the Riverside Stadium and saw Boro win 1-0 over Birmingham.

Percovich now has an opportunity to steer Boro in the right direction, with the South American having originally been the goalkeeping coach under Aitor Karanka, and he was also part of Jonathan Woodgate's coaching staff.

Percovich will take charge of Boro until a decision has been made on a permanent basis. He will be assisted in his role by academy manager Craig Liddle, under-23s coach Mark Tinkler and under-18s coach and former Boro midfielder Lee Cattermole.

Could Jokanovic Be a Safer Option?

If Woodgate is considered too inexperienced, the same thing doesn’t apply to this particular candidate for the Middlesbrough manager position. Slavisa Jokanovic has previously steered Fulham into the Premier League after getting past Derby and then Aston Villa in the play-offs, with the Cottagers getting the chance to compete in the country's top division with a host of new signings.

Unfortunately for the 54-year-old, things didn’t work out too well in the top flight. The London side retained an attractive brand of football but defensively were lacking to the extent that Jokanovic made way for Claudio Ranieri although his achievements might have been noted at the Riverside Stadium.

It should be noted that Jokanovic has also previously helped Watford land promotion at the first time of asking, and the fact that he’s managing at Dynamo Moscow might not deter Gibson from adding him to the shortlist for the job. The style of football that Fulham played was a real joy to watch, and the fans have been starved of entertaining football for what seems like decades.

The big concern is that if the former Sheffield United manager did help Boro to land promotion to the Premier League, would he be able to then create a squad who are capable of remaining a top-flight entity? It’s also true that Jokanovic has had ten different managerial positions during his career and that might be a cause for concern.

Scott Parker Could Be Open to Boro Switch

There are an increasing number of available football managers who have a Championship promotion on their CV. This includes Scott Parker who at the age of 41 is one of the youngest to have steered a football club to the Premier League. This recent achievement occurred during the 2021-22 season where he led Bournemouth to second place in the final standings.

He then clashed with the club's owners during the 2022-23 season and a 9-0 defeat at Anfield was the straw that broke the camel's back, with Parker claiming a lack of financial backing and the latter deciding to part company with the former Fulham manager.

Perhaps Parker would be a good fit for the Teeside club if he was prepared to travel north, something that he did as a player when signing for Newcastle United. It's no surprise to see him among the favourites to replace Chris Wilder.

Paul Warne Could Be Ready to Further His Career

Rotherham United have been pretty successful in recent times and look like they're capable of cementing a place in the Sky Bet Championship over the coming seasons. Much of the credit for this achievement comes down to Paul Warne who has engineered two promotions and his Millers team recently thwarted Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Warne has previously been linked with the Huddersfield Town manager's position and the 49-year-old has been at the Rotherham helm since 2016. As a player, he made 232 performances for the Yorkshire club and is regarded as getting his teams extremely fit and being able to outbattle the opposition.

It might be regarded as a risk to appoint someone who has only held one managerial position in his life, although a seven-year stint at the New York Stadium is testament to the fact that Warne has been able to build something special.
