Middlesbrough are searching for a new manager after former England midfielder Michael Carrick was relieved of his duties, having failed to make the playoffs for the second season in a row. Carrick’s team drew plaudits for the way they played, but he has paid the price for not getting a big team in contention to return to the Premier League.

The best betting apps in town have been linking some big names to the club, with none more than early favourite Steven Gerrard. Gerrard hugely impressed in his first role at Rangers but has flattered to deceive since and could look at this as a great opportunity. Rob Edwards, Steve Cooper and Sean Dyche are among the other names bandied around at new betting sites.

Steven Gerrard Early Favourite For Role

In his first job as a manager, Steven Gerrard led Rangers to their first SPL title since their relegation in 2012, and he did it in style. Rangers went through the league campaign undefeated, with Gerrard leaving to go to Aston Villa early the following season.

After an unsuccessful spell as Villa manager, Gerrard joined Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in 2023 but has been jobless since January. With his footballing pedigree, he’d be a great acquisition for a club like Middlesbrough, with ambitions of getting to the big time. It’s no surprise to see him top of the betting with football betting sites.

Rob Edwards Ready For Return After Leaving Luton

Having retired from playing football at 30, Rob Edwards now has almost 10 years of first team managerial experience behind him. The standout achievement on his CV is gaining promotion to the Premier League with Luton Town. This is obviously the sort of pedigree the bosses at Boro will be looking for from a new manager, and his success and knowledge in the league might just make him a more attractive candidate for the post than Gerrard, even if he is just behind in the market at most top UK betting sites.

Steve Cooper Has Championship Pedigree

Steve Cooper has been mentioned in dispatches for almost every conceivable job in the Premier League and Championship since he was sacked at Leicester City last season. The job he did there has been enhanced by how poorly the team performed under Ruud van Nistelrooy to end the season.

Cooper cut his teeth in the Championship with first Swansea City and then remarkably with Nottingham Forest, taking them from the relegation zone to promotion in the same season. The question would be whether he wanted to manage in the Championship again or wait for a Premier League opportunity. The odds with most Apple Pay betting sites would suggest he will at least interest the Boro higher ups.

Would Dyche Return to Championship?

Sean Dyche hasn’t managed in the Championship since guiding Burnley to the title in 2016, and that is part of the reason why Middlesbrough may attempt to court him. The Burnley legend spent 10 seasons at Turf Moor, seven of which were in the Premier League, and his recent spell at Everton shows he is still more than capable.

Although Dyche’s defensive football would be a stark contrast to the attacking style of the recently-fired Michael Carrick, a stoic back four can often be the key to success in the Championship, so it’s no surprise that he’s linked with the job at Middlesbrough at most £5 deposit betting sites.
