Are the play-offs beyond the Cumbrians this season?
Another chance for Carlisle to close the gap between themselves and the League Two play-off places was squandered at the weekend as Keith Curle’s men returned from Cambridge United having been held to a 0-0 draw. Seventh-placed AFC Wimbledon’s 1-0 win over Crawley Town on Saturday afternoon resulted in the gap between the Cumbrians and the top seven opening up to four points with Carlisle now sitting eleventh in the table.
Is this insurmountable? It certainly isn’t, however looking at Carlisle United’s recent results, one cannot get too excited about their chances of reaching the play-offs. The Cumbrians have won just three of their last thirteen games, not exactly promotion form. They desperately need to start winning again should they wish to keep the pressure on the top seven, although with AFC Wimbledon having played a game less than the Cumbrians, the omens don’t look too good.
Luton Town are certain to provide a tough obstacle for the home side at Brunton Park on Tuesday evening. The Hatters have won their last two outings, the most recent being a 3-2 victory away to Oxford United on Saturday afternoon. These victories have lifted Luton to just two points adrift of Carlisle United heading into this clash and given that the Cumbrians appear to have given up hope of reaching the play-offs, we’ll be siding with the visitors to get something from their long journey north.
Clearly both sides still have much still to play for, however going on recent results it looks as though Luton Town are hungrier for a play-off place. Carlisle have been returning some decent enough performances at Brunton Park, however we feel that any play-off ambitions that the Cumbrians may still have must now be put back to next year.
These sides are hard to separate on paper and an evenly-fought match is on the cards, therefore we’ll be expecting the spoils to be shared at Brunton Park on Tuesday evening.
