The BBC Sports Personality of the Year betting market continues to be wide open, with the Ashes and the Women's World Cup throwing up a couple of candidates who are now the favourites with the betting sites. Stuart Broad announced before the final Ashes Test of the summer that he would be imminently retiring, and the legendary English bowler has now been backed with betting apps to claim a first-ever SPOTY award.

Meanwhile, England managed to reach the Women's World Cup final before losing to Spain, although popular goalkeeper Mary Earps could become the second female football player to claim this accolade. Frankie Dettori is another sportsman set to retire soon, and the Italian continues to trade among the favourites, with England Test captain Ben Stokes also in the running after being included in the squad for the forthcoming Cricket World Cup.

Stuart Broad Could Be Honoured by BBC Voters This Year

Stuart Broad made a surprise announcement that he was going to retire from cricket midway through the fifth and final Ashes Test last summer. The 37-year-old decided to call it a day from all formats of the game, with the Nottinghamshire player then taking the final wicket of the series in what was a poignant moment for someone who will go down as an all-time great.

Broad has been a popular figure who made his England Test debut in 2007 and he clocked up 137 appearances for his country when it came to this form of the game. There were also 121 appearances for England's One Day team and a further 56 displays at Twenty20 level.

Although Broad could only help England to a 2-2 draw against Australia which meant that the latter retained the urn, there is sure to be a swell of sentimental voting for a player who looks set to be on the shortlist, according to most cricket betting sites.

Can Earps Follow in Footsteps of Beth Mead?

The past two winners of the Sports Personality of the Year award have been female, with Emma Raducanu's success in 2021 being followed by Beth Mead a year later. It could be that her Lionesses team-mate Mary Earps is now able to claim the 2023 award after a series of excellent performances at the 2023 Women's World Cup. She is currently second favourite with most football betting sites.

Earps saved a penalty against Spain in the final and was the winner of the Golden Glove after a spate of excellent displays, with the Manchester United stopper gaining publicity after her replica shirt was controversially not put on sale after the tournament. With Mead having demonstrated widespread popularity a year ago, it's clear that Earps is a serious contender to land the most votes, and her betting odds demonstrate that she has a lively chance.

Can Frankie Bow Out With a BBC Award?

Frankie Dettori has had a magnificent career and will go down as a legendary jockey, with horse racing betting sites having been shortening the Italian's odds for this award over the past few months. Although Dettori should technically be in the running for the Overseas Award, it's clear that the rider is something of an honorary Brit, and he's one of the favourites to win the award.

The 52-year-old has been in the saddle for decades and has a string of victories to his name, including four wins in the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas apiece. The Italian hasn't necessarily had a standout 2023, although there's a school of thought that the money will come for Dettori considering that he's been such a popular figure at the big race meetings for so long.

Considering the shortage of other contenders, it would be no surprise to find Dettori ending up finishing in the top three, and he's arguably the most popular jockey that has ever ridden in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Will Stokes Return to the BBC SPOTY Top Table?

Ben Stokes led England into battle against Australia last summer as the two cricket rivals battled it out for the miniature urn. Although England were only able to draw the series 202, there was some heroic performances from the skipper. This included a performance at Lord's which saw Stokes notch 155 runs from 214 balls.

Unfortunately, this amazing knock wasn't enough, but cricket betting sites certainly feel as though Stokes will be in contention to win Sports Personality of the Year, and perhaps the all-rounder can still win the award, with the talented player lining up to bat for England at the Cricket World Cup.

Fury Can’t Be Discounted Due to Boxing’s Popularity

Tyson Fury is the current WBC heavyweight champion after defeating Deontay Wilder in 2020, and he is always favourite to win his bouts with boxing betting sites thanks to his unbeaten record.

A proposed unification fight with Oleksandr Usyk fell through recently, suggesting that a bout isn’t likely to happen in the near future. However, perhaps things can be sorted during this calendar year. If not, Fury will face someone else with his belt on the line.

Should Fury defeat Usyk, then it would be easy to see a swell of votes coming for a fighter who has previously shown disinterest in the BBC award, although perhaps he will come round to accepting it and some bookies have him among the favourites to win the 2023 heat.

McIlroy Hoping for Ryder Cup Boost

Rory McIlroy’s major drought continues, and it’s getting close to 10 years since the Northern Irishman was last able to secure one of these titles. He’s still among the best golfers in the world, with the 33-year-old having won two PGA Championships, one US Open and one Open Championship in his career, and he remains a favourite for every major with golf betting sites leading into the tournaments.

We are in a Ryder Cup year, and it wouldn’t be the first time that McIlroy plays a starring role in this competition, with Europe desperate to regain the trophy in. If he can lead Europe to victory, he would likely be in the running for this award.
