NFL Football Picks Explained
There are a huge number of betting markets to consider when planning to wager on the NFL, but how do you know the best NFL bets this weekend? Bettors can wager the moneyline, parlay, tease bets, against the spread and so much more. Let's go over the most common bets placed by NFL bettors so that if you are new to betting, you'll know what we are talking about when we share our best NFL picks this week. Be sure to bookmark his page for free NFL picks throughout the season.
Best NFL Picks Against the Spread
The most popular bet when wagering on the NFL is betting against the spread (ATS). The spread is what oddsmakers use to try to "level" the playing field between two teams. When making NFL picks against the spread, bettors wager on the margin of victory (or margin of defeat) rather than on the outright winner.
The goal by oddsmakers is to set a spread that will encourage an equal betting on both sides. For the favorite to cover the spread, they must win by more than the number of points listed. Likewise, the underdog must not lose by more than the number of points listed. Of course, an underdog winning outright would also mean the spread is covered. Here is an example of what betting against the spread might look like at your favorite online sportsbook:
In this scenario, the Packers are favored over the Bears. For the Packers to cover the spread, they would need to win by more than 3 points. For the Bears to cover, they would need to win outright or lose by no more than 3 points. In both cases, the payout is the same (-110). However, that is not always the case as some sports betting sites will have slightly different spreads or odds.
All sportsbooks, including DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM, offer bets against the spread. Before you place your NFL ATS picks, be sure to check out Bookies for all the latest free NFL expert picks against the spread as well as other NFL picks from our handicappers.
NFL Picks Straight Up
Another way to bet on the NFL on the best sports apps, or from a desktop, is to bet games straight up, otherwise known as on the moneyline. This is a simple bet as a bettor wagers on whether a team will win a game. These bets are a little less popular as the payout is not as good when betting on the favorite. However, a moneyline bet on an underdog could prove to be extremely profitable. Here is an example of what a moneyline bet may look like in the NFL.
Because the Seahawks are the underdog in this game, we see a (+) number on the moneyline. That means that a $100 bet would payout $125. For the Cardinals, we see a (-) sign next to their name. That means that a bettor would need to place a $150 wager to win $100. Moneyline odds differ from site to site, so be sure to shop around for the best prices before placing a bet.
There are several strategies out there for best picking the moneyline, but a simple one is looking at how teams perform at home and on the road. Home teams win most games in the NFL, but there are a few teams that are better at home than most. Likewise, there are teams across the NFL who have exceptionally good records on the road. Make sure to research home/road splits, as well as weather, recent matchups, etc. before selecting your NFL best bets today.
Over / Under Free NFL Picks
Another common way to bet on the NFL is to bet on the over/under. In every game, oddsmakers set a number of points that will be scored in a game. Bettors must choose whether they believe there will be more (OVER) or fewer (UNDER) points scored in that contest. One of the reasons this is such a popular bet is that players don't have to root for one of the teams playing. Instead, they root for points to be scored or not to be scored. Here is an example of what a point total bet might look like in an NFL game:Cowboys vs. Steelers (O/U 57.5)
In most cases, the payout for an over/under bet is set at -110. However, those NFL odds and the total can vary from site to site. Make sure to shop around for the best odds and payouts before placing an over/under bet. Bettors would be wise to research how weather, playing surface and quarterback play impact the point total in a game. Point total bets can be parlayed with NFL picks vs spread and/or moneyline bets to increase odds and potential payouts. You can check out the week 7 odds
NFL Parlay Picks
One of the best parts of NFL betting is how easy it is to place parlay bets with huge payouts. A parlay bet is when two or more NFL bets are combined into a single ticket (or bet) with increased payouts. Parlay bets can contain multiple against the spread, moneyline or over/under bets. It's important to note that for a parlay bet to win, all legs of the parlay must hit. If not, the entire bet is deemed a loss.
Here is an example of what a three-team NFL parlay bet might look like and the potential payout:
- Giants -3.5 over Lions (-110)
- Jets (+230) over Patriots
- Ravens +6 over Browns (-110)
- Parlay Odds: +1,120
In this three-team parlay, a $100 bet would return $1,120. What makes parlays appealing is their potential for a bigger payout. The more teams/bets added to a parlay can greatly increase the potential winnings, but it also makes the bet less likely to happen. If you feel confident in one or two teams winning or covering a spread, creating a parlay is the ideal way to increase odds. Make sure to check out Bookies.com for the latest NFL betting advice when it comes to creating parlays and making the best NFL bets today.
A teaser bet is like a parlay bet as players combine two or more bets into a single ticket. Like a parlay, all legs of the teaser bet must hit for the ticket to be deemed a "WIN" for the player. The biggest difference in a teaser bet is that the odds are lowered to make each bet more likely to hit. This decreases the potential payout but makes hitting multiple bets far more likely. Here is an example of a seven-point teaser bet:
- Raiders +3 over Broncos (-109)
- Buccaneers -4 over Saints (-113)
- Lions -1 over Packers (-114)
PARLAY ODDS: +578
7-POINT TEASER LINES
- Raiders +10 over Broncos
- Buccaneers +3 over Saints
- Lions +6 over Packers

TEASER ODDS: +135
NFL teaser bets have become more popular in recent years, but they still are not as common as traditional parlay bets. Most online sportsbooks will allow players to tease NFL games at -6, -6.5, -7.5 and sometimes even -10 or more points. Make sure to check out your favorite online sportsbook to see what teaser options are available for your top NFL bets.
NFL Futures Bets
An NFL futures bet is an NFL pick on an event or award that will take place in the future. Think of them like making longer-term NFL predictions. The most common NFL futures bet is wagering on Super Bowl odds to be the next NFL champion.
Players can wager on their favorite team to win the Super Bowl, win their division, make the playoffs, and so on. Other common futures bets includes the NFL MVP award along with Rookie of the Year honors, Coach of the Year and so much more.
The downside to NFL futures bets is that they aren't paid out until the end of the year. However, futures bets allow bettors to watch and root for their favorite teams or players all year long. Be sure to check out Bookies for all the latest free NFL picks today - including futures bets.
NFL Prop Bets
One of the newest ways to bet on the NFL is prop bets, which are rising in popularity. A prop bet is a single bet on a player or team to accomplish a specific feat. For example, a bet can be placed on Tom Brady's total passing yards in a single game. Players can make all kinds of NFL football predictions by wagering on many different markets, such as picking the first touchdown scorer in an upcoming game.
Typically, the bigger the game and the bigger the stage, the more prop bets will be available to players. In playoff games and in particular for the Super Bowl, the number of prop bets available and their uniqueness is staggering. That's why you should look to us for your NFL pro picks. Sometimes, it can be hard to sort through it all.
NFL Draft Prop Bets
Betting on the NFL Draft has increased in popularity in recent years to the extent that during the 2021 NFL Draft, media members used prop bet lines and odds to increase their accuracy when projecting the 49ers' No.3 overall pick.
Bettors can wager on almost anything draft-related, including NFL over/under picks on the number of position players drafted in Round 1, which team will draft a specific player and so on. Draft props are just one of the many ways to bet on the NFL outside of just picking the spread or the moneyline.
Most of the time, prop bets cannot be parlayed together as they are single bets. However, more and more of the best sportsbooks, including FanDuel, are now giving players the ability to combine multiple prop bets into one single bet as a promotion for their "Same Game Parlay" feature. Be sure to check your favorite NFL sportsbook to see if you can combine prop bets into a parlay.
NFL Season and Schedule 2021/22
The NFL schedule for the 2021 season has already been released, and there are a ton of fantastic games on the slate. It kicks off with the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosting the Dallas Cowboys on NBC's Thursday Night Football in what is sure to be one of the NFL bets of the week. You can check out the rest of the NFL Wild-Card Weekend Odds & Tips here, along with analysis for each matchup.
This is the first season in NFL history with 17 regular-season games. The addition of an extra game week to the NFL schedule is great news for bettors, because it means another week of action where players are trying their hardest (unlike in preseason).
