Aaron Rodgers finally returns to MetLife Stadium, where his 2023 season ended on the first drive of the year, as the New York Jets make their home debut to face the rival New England Patriots in the Week 3 edition of Thursday Night Football. 

Rodgers and the Jets are 1-1, rebounding from an opening loss to the 49ers to better the Titans in Nashville on Sunday. The Patriots opened the year by shocking the Bengals in Cincinnati, but missed out on a 2-0 start with an OT home loss to the Seahawks.

The underrated Jacoby Brissett has his games of surprise, and it happened again in Week 1 when he led the Pats to a victory over Joe Burrow and the Bengals. His game was thwarted by a Seahawks defense that brought a pressure similar to what New York hopes to establish. 

From a talent standpoint, this is a rebuilding year for New England, and a Super Bowl-or-bust campaign for Rodgers and NYJ. From a matchup standpoint, it’s just as lopsided, especially when the Pats have the ball. Back the Jets to cover the spread, but lock it in before it jumps to -7 or higher.

Patriots vs. Jets Over/Under

This is a relatively low total, one that is more dictated by the Patriots. Their defense has allowed just 33 points through two games, but the offense has managed only 36.

As for the Jets, the defense is the strength of the team. They really wanted to establish the run, but Breece Hall hasn’t gotten going and Rodgers has been content keeping the pace slow. It adds up to a grinder of a TNF matchup. Side with the Under, but play more on the spread.

The Jets are at -285 on the moneyline, so it would take a $285 wager to win $100 in profit with a victory. Conversely, the Patriots are at +230 (wager $100 to win $230 in profit). 

While we’re going with the Jets to cover, backing them at these odds seems like a trap. New York rallied to edge the Titans in Week 2, and the Patriots have been highly competitive. We’re OK sprinkling on the Jets because our data doesn’t believe it’s going to be close, but we’re not sold on Robert Saleh’s in-game management.

Stevenson is the focus of the Pats’ offense. In Game 1 he rushed 25 times for 120 yards and a touchdown, and last Sunday gained 81 yards on 21 carries. Wilson has been the most consistent target for Rodgers, catching four and six passes in the two games, for 60 and 57 yards. New England has been very tough to run on so far, and you just know Rodgers wants to make a good showing in a reboot of his Jets home debut. Look for QB12 to look for his WR1 early and often.
