In four years with J.B. Bickerstaff as coach, the Cleveland Cavaliers took their success one step further. Apparently, the train wasn’t moving fast enough. Bickerstaff was fired after the Cavs were eliminated by the destined Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. It was the first time the team made it to the second round since the LeBron James era. 

The new Cavs coach will inherit a backcourt drama with Darius Garland expected to request a trade if the team inks star Donovan Mitchell to a new deal, and question marks with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley potentially on the block as well.

Frank Vogel led the Lakers to an NBA title just four seasons ago. Since then, he’s been fired twice. Such is life in today’s win-now environment. But now he’s available, is a proven winner, and could relish getting out of the spotlights in L.A. and Phoenix. 

There are several up-and-coming assistants who, many insiders believe, are ready to take that next step into head territory. 

New Orleans Pelicans associate coach James Borrego, who previously guided the Hornets and Magic and was a longtime assistant to Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, leads the field. He’s a strong candidate for the Lakers’ head coach opening as well. 

Micah Nori has been an NBA assistant in the NBA since 2009. He's currently with the Timberwolves and acting as head coach as Minnesota HC Chris Finch sits and deals with a leg injury. 

David Adelman is the lead assistant for the defending champion Denver Nuggets, and son of longtime coach Rick Adelman. 

Chris Quinn is the trusted assistant for Erik Spoelstra in Miami, and many believe he’d make a great head coach, if he wants to make that decision. Celtics assistant Sam Cassell could also get strong looks. NBA analyst and former player JJ Redick is presumed to be a future head coach and could wow the interview process. 

Then there’s LeBron James, who is winding down his GOAT-level career. He plans to play next season, and wants to suit up with Bronny James, wherever he ends up for his rookie year. 

Can one think of a better “everyone wins” scenario in which the Cavs make hometown hero LeBron a player/coach then the team drafts Bronny? What a full-circle moment that would be for LeBron. Who says you can’t go home again?
